Parkland parents decry game that simulates school shootings

  • A planned video game in which a player can be a school shooter draws outrage

Active Shooter, a video game that allows players to simulate a school shooting, has prompted a backlash in the wake of recent high school shootings in the U.S.

"Active Shooter", which is set for release on June 6, will come out four months after 17 students and faculty were killed by a gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Scheduled to go on sale June 6th, this game allows the player to take on the role of either the shooter or the SWAT team in an office or school environment.

Complaints about the game have been fierce, and yesterday the person behind the game said they will probably remove the option to play as the mass shooter. "First of all, this game does not promote any sort of violence, especially any sort of a mass shooting", they wrote in a post on Steam, noting that the game was originally just going to be about SWAT teams, but then they decided to make shooters and civilians playable as well.

"If your kids think this is a fun game to play, there are bigger conversations to have than just about a video game", said Rice. "If you feel like hurting someone or people around you, please seek help from local psychiatrists or dial 911 (or applicable)", it said.

Andrew Pollack, the father of 18-year-old Meadow Pollack, who was killed on the third floor of the high school's 1200 building, said "sick people" were behind the game's creation and release. "Be the good guy or the bad guy".

Its Australian developer Ryan Lambourn would later make a game called The Slaying Of Sandy Hook Elementary, which positions itself as in favor of increased gun control laws.

Active Shooter is being derided by gamers on social media and the developer is seemingly embracing controversy to boost sales.

Valve Software, which owns Steam, did not reply to requests for comment about Active Shooter or how it was approved for sale on the platform.

"We're appalled that the game is being marketed". A "civilian survival mode" will be added later.

But after hearing all of the outrage, Acid still tried to defend the game, deflecting to other historically tacky games, writing "As I mentioned on steam discussion forums, there are games like Hatred, Postal, Carmageddon and etc., which are even worst compared to "Active Shooter" and literally focuses on mass shootings/killings of people".

The game is receiving an outcry after a student shot and killed 10 people in Santa Fe, Texas.

Valve has not indicated that it will remove the game from Steam, as its content policy only explicitly forbids hate speech, pornography, and adult content that's not properly labeled with warnings.
