"Alice Marie Johnson was convicted of a nonviolent drug offense in 1996 and received a sentence far too severe for the crime: life without the possibility of parole", said Jennifer Turner of the ACLU in a statement.

Kardashian West's attorney, Shawn Holley, tells ET that the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star personally called Johnson on the phone to break the news to her on Wednesday.

Because of the availability of videoconferencing in Johnson's prison, Mic was able to record an interview with Johnson.

Following the news, many people hopped on Twitter to share their reactions.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders stressed that Ms. Johnson had already served nearly 22 years for a first-time criminal office. In the Change.org petition she started to help free her mother, Tretessa Johnson quoted Alice as saying, "I couldn't find a job fast enough to take care of my family".

The White House said Alice Johnson had been a model prisoner and worked hard to rehabilitate herself. After Trump announced he was granting Alice clemency, Kim tweeted, "The phone call I just had with Alice will forever be one of my best memories".

The decision was made one week after Kim Kardashian's White House visit where she advocated on Johnson's behalf.

She was arrested in 1993 and accused of participating in a drug trafficking and money-laundering operation that distributed cocaine.

"I always had hope she'd be released, but I didn't know that today when I woke up this morning today was the day", she said.

Trump to Disney CEO after 'Roseanne' scrapped: Where is my apology?
The tweet was widely considered racist, since Jarrett is an African-American woman and Barr made a comparison to an ape . On Wednesday, she attributed her lack of judgment in the incident to her taking of sleeping pill Ambien.

Then turning her talk to Kardashian, she added: "And I want to tell Kim, my angel, that you never gave up on me".

The commutation puts a renewed focus on the Trump administration's push for prison and sentencing reform, but which has sometimes clashed with the president's law-and-order approach, especially at the Justice Department.

Alice Johnson, 63, said Mr Trump had given her another chance in life and restored her to her family. Johnson said her role was that of a go-between, relaying messages but not personally making drug deals or selling drugs.

Kanye West recently raised eyebrows after tweeting about his "love" for Trump and describing him as a "brother" with whom he shared "dragon energy".

Johnson has served nearly 22 years in prison as part of a life sentence for a non-violent drug offense.

Trump granted Johnson clemency on Wednesday.

Scholl added that Johnson has admitted her wrongdoing, which is borne out in letters she has written to U.S. District Judge Samuel H. Mays, who now oversees her case.

Kardashian West also discussed criminal justice reform with Mr Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner.
