  • CDC: US suicide rates have climbed dramatically

In half of the states, suicide among people 10 years and older increased more than 30 percent.

Majority of those who died without known mental health conditions are male (84 percent) and by firearm (51 percent).

"The data are disturbing", said Anne Schuchat, CDC principal deputy director. Experts say that this study reveals that not all who are suffering from long term mental health problems are at suicide risk.

"We need to have people understand that just because there was a high profile death by suicide it doesn't mean it has to be your outcome, too", he said.

The nationwide suicide rate rose 30 percent during that time frame.

If you or a loved one are having suicidal thoughts or would like to speak to someone, you can call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK.

Research shows suicides are up in nearly every state across the country. That compares to 69 percent and 41 percent, respectively, among those with known mental health conditions.

In a closer look at suicides in 2015, CDC researchers found that 29.4% took place within two weeks of a crisis - most commonly a breakup or other problem related to an intimate-partner relationship. While it's possible to connect with help through social media, Richardson says it's also made people more aware of suicides, and of ways of doing it. Gould of Columbia University has studied at least 50 suicide clusters around the US, and in her book, "The Contagion of Suicidal Behavior", says the only connecting threads in each case is that those committing suicide are close in age.

"It's just one of those things you can't hardly believe", said Culbreath. People ages 10-24 had the lowest rate.

The statement lists steps to help prevent suicide, including funding research to help identify people at high risk, increasing public awareness about the importance of effective mental health care, and funding the CDC's National Violent Death Reporting System to help better understand data at the time of a suicide and survey the problem.

Guns were used in roughly half the suicides in 2016.

"Early identification of mental illness is essential, and we are ready to work with Congress and other stakeholders to ensure that Americans can receive treatment when needed", Levin said in the release.

"There have been previous reports recently that have shown suicide is one of the major contributors to a decrease in life expectancy in this country, which makes it even more alarming", he said.
