President Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani said that he can fully understand why Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from investigations related to Russian Federation and the presidential election and that he might have done the same, had he accepted that job, as Trump wanted. “There are lots of really good lawyers in the country, he could have picked somebody else!”.

As per The Hill, Gowdy, who was later quoted by Trump said the US President was merely "expressing frustration that Attorney General Sessions should have shared these reasons for recusal before he took the job, not afterwards".

Asked why Trump persists with his "spygate" claim, Gowdy - who is not running for re-election for his SC seat and has made a point of keeping his distance from the White House on the Russian Federation investigation - said, "I've never met or talked to the president".

Gowdy said he believes Trump would have picked someone else had he known Sessions would step back from that investigation.

Another source familiar with the discussions tells CNN that Sessions met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago soon after the recusal and there was a confrontation.

President Trump has interpreted the existence of the source as the Federal Bureau of Investigation planting a spy in his campaign, according to his many recent tweets on the subject. "I don't know what he was doing", Giuliani said.

Sessions, one of Trumps biggest boosters during the 2016 campaign, recused himself in March 2017 from any investigations related to the campaign.

The request for the latest documents are the latest in a series of subpoenas to the Justice Department for sensitive information. But it seems that even before he became president, people around the world knew that Donald Trump was a man who could be bought.

Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., a fierce Trump critic, tweeted: "Thank you Trey Gowdy for speaking the truth". It comes amid fresh news reports that Trump had asked Sessions to rescind his recusal. At the time, he was the first Trump cabinet official known to be interviewed.

According to the Times, special counsel Robert Mueller's interest in the incidents demonstrates that Sessions has an "overlooked role as a key witness" into whether Trump tried to obstruct the special counsel inquiry.

Presidential attorney Rudy Giuliani and former Trump campaign adviser Sam Nunberg say Mr. Trump acted within the bounds of his presidential authority.

Lawmakers demanded the briefing following reports that a government informant approached Trump campaign officials. "I only want to see the documents", he said.

Trump has also denounced Mueller's investigation as a "witch hunt", and attacked the investigation in an effort to undermine it.

"Donald Trump was never the target of the investigation, he isn't the current target of the investigation", Gowdy said during an interview with Fox News Tuesday evening.
