President Donald Trump said today that he may consider granting a posthumous pardon to heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

Ali was convicted in 1967 of draft evasion during the Vietnam War.

Although Ali's conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court in 1971, it had a massive impact on his boxing career, as he didn't fight for more than three years, from March 1967 until October 1970, as no state would license him to box. "The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Muhammad Ali unanimously in 1971".

Trump also said he was thinking about granting clemency to "some others", adding that he has a list of 3,000 potential names.

Trump said he was considering a number of other pardons too and said that the pardoning power was "a attractive thing" for presidents.

Ali died just over two years ago at the age of 74. Earlier this week, Trump commuted the life sentence of a woman whose cause was championed by Kim Kardashian West. "We're looking at them", Trump said.

Trump said he was not considering pardoning O.J. Simpson.

The president has recently mooted pardons for lifestyle personality Martha Stewart and former governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich.

"We appreciate President Trump's sentiment, but a pardon is unnecessary", the statement said.

In his first use of that power, Trump spared a former Arizona sheriff, Joe Arpaio, the prospect of serving jail time after a conviction stemming from his use of immigration patrols that focused on Latinos. "There is no conviction for which a pardon is needed".

Johnson, who served nearly 22 years in federal prison for a first-time criminal offense, was pardoned this week.
