  • BREAKING Assassination attempt at ED Chiwenga in Byo

An explosion rocked Zimbabwe's White City Stadium in Bulawayo the venue of a presidential campaign rally.

He was not hurt, his spokesman said. It added that several people were said to have been injured but that the extent of the injuries had not yet been established.

Last November, Chiwenga led a military operation that saw the end of President Robert Mugabe's 37-year strongman rule and the rise of Mnangagwa, his protege.

VP Mohadi sustained an injury to the leg but was in high spirits; while Minister Muchunguri-Kashiri was injured in the chest but was said to be stable.

Other senior officials are also said to have been injured, as well as some of their bodyguards. "Suddenly soldiers and other security details were all over the place", said an AFP correspondent at the scene.

The president has joked about the attempts on his life while on the campaign trail.

Mnangagwa said on Twitter that he was awaiting further information about the blast but added, without elaborating, that those responsible must have come from "outside Bulawayo".

Vice-President Kembo Mohadi, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga's wife Marry, Zanu PF national chairperson Oppah Muchinguri and Zanu PF national commissar Engelbert Rugeje, were among some of the injured.

In a statement released on Sunday, the ANC says it views it as "barbaric and cowardice acts" of assassination attempts and deliberate ploys to destabilise and create disunity. Political violence in any form is unacceptable and contrary to the positive progress required to move Zimbabwe forward as it seeks to take its place on the global stage.

The main competition will be between Mnangagwa and the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change's leader, 40-year-old Nelson Chamisa.

The Head of State emphasized that politics of violence has no space in today's modern politics. "So we urge the government to take appropriate action and also we want to encourage Zanu PF to deal with their issues peacefully without the issue of violence", Mlalazi said.
