GitHub has been Acquired by Microsoft | Developers Revolt

San Francisco-based GitHub launched in 2008 as a way for software developers to upload, share and use code in a variety of languages for their projects. Microsoft is the top contributor to the site, and has more than 1,000 employees actively pushing code to repositories on GitHub.

Microsoft said GitHub will continue to operate independently and "provide an open platform for all developers in all industries".

Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, said that the acquisition is in line with the tech giant's ethos of being a developer-first company and that it signifies Microsoft's "commitment" to strengthening this ethos.

Github, on the other hand, claims to now support a community of more than 27 million people who share and work together to build software. Their VS Code project alone is beloved by millions of developers, entirely open source, and built using GitHub's Electron platform.

Talks of the deal were first reported by Business Insider late last week in a report that noted GitHub's recent reluctance to sell itself to another company; GitHub was previously valued at $2 billion in 2015.

"Most importantly, we recognize the responsibility we take on with this agreement", said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, according to The Verge.

If confirmed, the acquisition will concern many developers anxious about what Microsoft will do to GitHub as a service.

Meanwhile, Github has been struggling for 9 months to find a replacement for Chris Wanstrath, who announced he was stepping down as CEO previous year.

According to a blog post by Microsoft, the transaction will be completed by the end of this year.

If you aren't a developer, then the name GitHub may not mean much to you, but for developers it's a big deal. It also helps Microsoft, which is increasingly relying on open-source software, to add programming tools and tie up with a company that has become a key part of the way Microsoft writes its own software.

As Bloomberg reports, Microsoft is believed to have acquired GitHub.

GitHub's current chief executive, Chris Wanstrath, will move to Microsoft as a technical fellow to work on strategic software initiatives.

Friedman says plainly that this isn't in the cards: GitHub has won over 24 million developers because of its openness to all tools and technology, and it wouldn't do to hamstring it now.
