Mattis: China Trying to Intimidate, Coerce Neighbors in South China Sea

  • Mattis takes hard line on China in Singapore speech

The United States is willing to work with China on a "results- oriented" relationship, but Beijing's actions in the South China Sea were coercive and the Pentagon would "compete vigorously" if needed, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Saturday.

Mr Mattis said maintaining freedom of navigation in the region was...

Satellite photographs taken on 12 May showed China appeared to have deployed truck-mounted surface-to-air missiles or anti-ship cruise missiles at Woody Island in the disputed sea.

It comes days after Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was said to have threatened war if his troops were harmed in the area, which his country also lays claim to.

US Defense Secretary James Mattis accused China of "intimidation and coercion" in the Indo-Pacific and declared that the United States does not plan to abandon its role in the region during a speech Saturday in Singapore.

In a more conciliatory tone, Mattis said the USA would continue to pursue "cooperation whenever possible".

Mr Mattis said the USA is willing to work with China on a "results- oriented" relationship, but Beijing's actions in the South China Sea were coercive and the Pentagon would "compete vigorously" if needed.

Last month, China's air force landed bombers on disputed islands and reefs in the South China Sea as part of a training exercise, triggering concern from Vietnam and the Philippines.

Mr Mattis's comments drew a pointed reaction from a Chinese official at the meeting. Senior Colonel Zhao Xiaozhuo, deputy director of the Center on China-U.S. Defense Relations in the PLA's Academy of Military Science, said the U.S. had sent destroyers into Chinese territorial waters, a move that "violated the law" of China.

During a question and answer session afterward, Mattis fielded a question from a Chinese colonel, who claimed that US freedom of navigation operations (FONOPs) are a provocation that violate global law.

"I believe there are much larger consequences in the future", he said.

The defence secretary also confirmed the Pentagon was keen to help Taiwan defend itself, in comments that were likely to further anger China, which also claims the island.

"All irresponsible remarks [on the subject] are an infringement of China's domestic affairs." he told a press conference just two hours after Mattis said in his speech at the event that Beijing had been "intimidating and coercing" its neighbours with its military activities in the disputed waterway.

"These waters, to us, are free and open worldwide waters", Mattis said.

He added that the status of US troops in South Korea was not on the table when Trump and Kim meet, but left the door open to the issue being discussed down the road between Seoul and Washington if certain conditions were met. Mr. Trump announced Friday that the nuclear-weapons summit he had canceled with North Korea's Kim Jong Un is back on.

Mattis said the Pentagon will "hold the line" and support the diplomatic effort to secure the "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Mattis made clear that the US does not expect nations to choose between the USA and China, adding that Beijing should have a voice in shaping the region, while allies have a voice in shaping China's role.
