Microsoft acquires GitHub for $7.5 billion

  • Microsoft reportedly in talks to acquire GitHub

San Francisco-based GitHub launched in 2008 as a way for software developers to upload, share and use code in a variety of languages for their projects.

Why this matters: Microsoft says it's been the most active organization on GitHub, and that it wants it to operate independently. Chris and the early team designed Github for their own use, but quickly saw the enormous opportunity in connecting developers everywhere, and that simple concept has changed software development forever.

It's unclear how much Microsoft will pay for GitHub, but the code repository company was valued at $2 billion in 2015.

"Most importantly, we recognize the responsibility we take on with this agreement", said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, according to The Verge.

Microsoft has been trying to move towards open source philosophy after Satya Nadella took over. It has been looking for a new CEO since co-founder Chris Wanstrath announced his resignation from the role previous year.

Microsoft has flirted with buying GitHub in the past, including in 2016, although GitHub denied it then too.

Brigitte , who has been married five times, is married to Italian TV producer Mattia Dessì, 39. The post came after she revealed earlier this week that she is pregnant with her fifth child.

Simple: In this age of competing cloud and mobile platforms, many of which it does not control, Microsoft needs to get its superior software development tools and services in front of more developers.

Business Insider spoke to Friedman and Wanstrath following news of the acquisition, where the two laid out the master plan for GitHub after the deal closes later this year. "Nat has a ton of experience with software and the open source software community, having co-founded Xamarin and worked on numerous open source projects over the years, and is the flawless person to help GitHub grow and continue to make life better for developers". Microsoft seemingly understood that GitHub was the preferred platform for developers and chose to acquire it instead of competing against it.

GitHub's co-founder and current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will join Microsoft as a technical fellow to work on software initiatives.

That said, GitHub is more significant than Microsoft, and its unlikely its goal will be modified once the Redmond-based giant takes over day-to-day operations.

Microsoft shares rose almost 1 percent to hit a record high of $101.79.
