  • Cigarette smoking causes ten deaths per minute

"As the report explains, only one in eight countries is on track to meet the voluntary global target to reduce tobacco use".

The organisation said it was concerned over the number of deaths caused by tobacco use as the global tobacco epidemic killed more than seven million people yearly.

"Most people know that using tobacco causes cancer and lung disease, but many people aren't aware that tobacco also causes heart disease and stroke - the world's leading killers", said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

He therefore stated that "World No Tobacco Day is a chance for governments and the public to take firm action". The report shows that worldwide, 27 per cent smoked tobacco in 2000 compared to 20 per cent in 2016.

Smoking and chewing tobacco are one of the leading causes for cardiovascular diseases, which is the leading cause of death in the UAE, according to Gulf News.

For example, this includes making public indoor spaces and workplaces smoke-free, and insisting that tobacco packaging carry warnings about the health risks to users. This is due to population growth, even as prevalence rates decline.

In that regard, Dr. Mohammed Mosli, Medical Officer of Health for AHS Central Zone says if it were up to him, he wouldn't want anyone to use cannabis but admits Canada has one of the highest rates of cannabis use in the world. Over half of all World Health Organization member states have reduced demand for tobacco, and nearly one in eight are likely to meet the 30 per cent reduction target by 2025.

The footage, released yesterday for World No Tobacco Day, ends with the message "protect your heart and choose health - not tobacco".

Developing countries: Over 80% of tobacco smokers live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICS).

Jeff Stephens with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network says bringing parity between cigarettes and chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes and cigars will help keep young people from ultimately smoking.

The scale of tobacco-related devastation of human health is shocking, but as Ghebreyesus said these deaths are preventable.

Although thought to be considerably safer than tobacco cigarettes, studies have linked long-term use to heart disease and cancer.

Further, Acharya cautioned that the coming generations must be timely protected from the devastating consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke.

Elsewhere in Asia, and around the world, millions of smokers are switching like never before from cigarettes to innovative, smoke-free alternatives like electronic cigarettes or heated tobacco products. Both of these disruptive products eliminate the smoke and significantly reduce levels of harmful chemicals, while still delivering the nicotine and ritual that millions of smokers seek. As per data, 19 per cent of men, 2 per cent of women and 10.7 per cent of all adults now smoke tobacco, while 29.6 per cent of men, 12.8 per cent of women and 21.4 per cent of all adults now use smokeless tobacco.
