Republican candidate lands spot in California governor's race

  • The women's march which followed Mr Trump's election

Republican businessman John Cox, who will face Democratic Lt. Govenor Gavin Newsom in the California governor's race, had the backing of President Donald Trump.

But in California, home to the most closely watched races on Tuesday, Republican incumbents largely came out on top in several key districts.

After votes in 21 states, including California and seven others that held primaries on Tuesday, Democrats have avoided potential pitfalls and secured general-election candidates in many Republican-held districts who have compelling biographical stories and political profiles that party leaders hope will have broad appeal in a nation that tends to vote for change at this stage in the electoral cycle. Because the issue is, is that they have so many Democrats running in these individual races, and Republicans are really solidified between one, two, or three candidates, and so if two republicans are the top two vote-getters, then no Democrats make it to the November election.

In one unequivocally good piece of news for the state's GOP in this election, voters overwhelmingly opted to fire Josh Newman from his state Senate seat in Orange County. But so far neither party appears to have suffered any major setbacks.

That said, Republicans showed more strength than expected, given that in 2016 Trump had lost to Hillary Clinton in all of the districts on the target list, and it may still be hard for Democrats to make big congressional gains in California. "It's kind of sad when they tout it as a victory just to get a candidate on the November ballot".

California voters are rejecting the Democratic mantra of tax hikes, protecting sanctuary cities, and the hyper-partisan and baseless impeachment witch hunt.

On the GOP side, Rep. Kristi Noem won the Republican primary in South Dakota, where she could become that state's first female governor if she beats Democratic state Sen. The Democrats controlled both chambers for the first two years of Obama's presidency, but Republicans won the majority in the House in the 2010 midterm elections. With state officials still processing votes by mail - an increasing proportion of the California's ballots - the picture remains hazy.

Salvaged Trump-Kim summit a win for North Korea
An advance team, led by deputy chief of staff Joe Hagin, has held meetings with the North Korean team in Singapore this week. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who met with Kim yesterday, said he felt negotiations were "moving in the right direction".

The governor's race was one of many drawing attention to California, a state not accustomed to being a national political battleground.

It's "clear that Democrats are in a stronger position than ever to take back the House, and winning districts in California will be central to that path", Tyler Law, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said in a statement.

Much of Tuesday's drama focused on women, including the former federal prosecutor and Navy pilot Mikie Sherrill, who bested a field of rivals in New Jersey for the Democratic nomination to replace the retiring Republican Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen. Republicans won 53 percent of the primary vote on Tuesday. If Grisham wins, she'll be the second Latina to become the state's executive, after Martinez. And New Jersey has four competitive House races going on this year. There are two interconnected findings in the survey that suggest the Republican vision of what voters think about Trump and the GOP may be somewhat misguided. The two candidates with the most votes, regardless of party affiliation, face off in the November general election. Bob Menendez, a Democrat who faced federal bribery charges past year.

But for the second straight election, Republicans could not get a candidate through to the general election for the Senate.

In two of the three Southern California districts, Democrats were coming in second place behind Republicans, but the races were too close to call early Wednesday, leaving Democrats at risk of being locked out.

A key Senate race took shape in the heart of Trump country as well.

Long-term Republican incumbents Frank LoBiondo in the 2nd District and Rodney Frelinghyusen in the 11th both served 24 years each in the House before deciding to not to run for re-election, making those seats attainable for Democrats for the first time in years.
