Sharapova thrashes Pliskova at French Open

Serena Williams of the US celebrates winning her second round match against Australia's Ashleigh Barty.

Williams returned to Grand Slam tennis this month for the first time since her victory a year ago at the Australian Open, a tournament she won while eight weeks pregnant. "So it is definitely a little functionality to it", Williams said in a press event after the match.

"I remember one day, I couldn't find Olympia's bottle", she recalls.

Speaking on court after the match, a jubilant Williams said: "I lost the first set and I just though I have to try harder".

In her glittering career so far Williams has won 23 Grand Slam titles - one away from the record held by Australia's Margaret Court. "I remember one day, I couldn't find Olympia's bottle and I got so upset I started crying. because I wanted to be ideal for her".

Czech Pliskova made the semi-finals here previous year, and may fancy her chances against Sharapova, who had to fight hard to get past Richel Hogenkamp and Vekic in her first two matches.

Williams once again appeared in her striking, all-black catsuit.

But the American insisted it was crucial to help prevent a return of life-threatening blood clots.

Sharapova had struggled on serve in her opening wins over Richel Hogenkamp and Donna Vekic, and she was broken in the very first game of the match.

"It's not easy to come back with everything I have been through and there has been so many other women that have been through the same thing, and we just don't talk about it".
