European officials at the summit were shocked by the idea, or dismissive, and Tusk, while admitting that it was hard to be surprised by Trump's pronouncements any more, said: "Let's leave the G7 as it is".

That statement sought to overcome deep disagreements, notably over trade.

Macron's office stressed that France and Europe maintained their support for the communique, saying there was no place for anger on the circuit of global diplomacy.

After a meeting with President Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron said last night that he believes when it comes to trade there is a way to progress together.

"International cooperation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks", the Elysee Palace said.

"These are jointly shared principles, although the pitfalls lie in the details", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a press conference before the release of the communique.

So how did the latest spat unfold?

I mean, we have India, where some of the tariffs are 100 per cent.

Saturday's final communique aimed at easing those tensions by advocating a "rules-based trading system".

NPR's Ayesha Rascoe is in Quebec for the summit, and she's with us now. "Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

He said the move was based on Mr Trudeau's "false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies".

Trump's apparent threat to end US trade deals with top allies came as he feuded with French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other leaders over the trade war he instigated late last month.

What is in the joint communique?

He says the meeting was not contentious and that he gets along well with the other leaders.

The annual summit sees leaders of seven of the world's most powerful nations - the United Kingdom, the USA, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada - come together for discussion.

Climate: An agreement to disagree.

Mr. Macron, feuding with Mr. Trump over USA steel and aluminum tariffs on the European Union, tweeted that he and the other six leaders were prepared to turn their backs on Mr. Trump at the summit.

The president said the US was "pretty close" to reaching an agreement on the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico and had discussed two types of sunset provisions in which any of the countries could leave the deal. Canada's average tariff for imported goods is 3.1%, and the EU's average tariff for imported goods is 3%.

Such a move could make it almost impossible to renegotiate the terms of the 1994 NAFTA pact between the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Trudeau told Trump that it was "unacceptable" to cite national security when targeting a military ally like Canada.
