The president spoke directly to a number of team owners, with at least one, Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, saying that Trump had influenced him to rescind his support for players who protested during the anthem. I understand that. I'm going to ask them to recommend to me people that were unfairly treated.

Trump also floated the idea of pardoning the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who was convicted for refusing to fight in Vietnam.

When asked if he'd invite players to the White House for a roundtable chat, the president said he doesn't have to do that.

The anthem controversy, meanwhile, has ignited a racially sensitive national debate over free speech, pitting mostly black athletes against white NFL owners, and Trump has seized on the issue to energize his political base. They have the option to remain in the locker room for the anthem if they choose.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said during his deposition that Trump had told him: "This is a very winning, strong issue for me".

The findings take on special significance since earlier this week, President Donald Trump canceled a planned White House celebration with the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles and chose to hold a Patriotic celebration instead, calling out kneeling as "disrespectful".

Trump's call for names of those perceived to have been mistreated by the justice system comes just days after the president commuted the prison sentence of Alice Johnson, a decision he made after meeting with reality star Kim Kardashian at the White House last week.
