If Trump signs the bill into law, the legislation would resolve that conflict between the state and federal marijuana laws.
As the US president was leaving Washington, D.C., Friday to attend the G-7 summit meeting in Canada, he suggested that perhaps it was time to bring Russian Federation back into the group that expelled it four years ago following the invasion of Ukraine.
Gardner says the bill will protect public safety by giving legitimate marijuana businesses acccess to banking. "We are happy he is backing this bill and we look forward to his continued support as we push for more comprehensive reforms and fair treatment for the cannabis industry".
Warren, long a critic of President Donald Trump, said: "I certainly hope that we have more people standing up for honesty and transparency".
Gardner said the STATES Act "ensures the federal government will respect the will of the voters - whether that is legalization or prohibition - and not interfere in any states' legal marijuana industry".
Legal marijuana is expected to bring in over $6 billion in business. "So part of the pitch here for getting a vote through Congress is to say 'This is for the states who want to act'".
Even after the Senate passed the historic bill to legalize recreational marijuana use Thursday, the question remains: how soon can Canadians start lawfully toking up?

California is now the world's largest legal recreational marijuana economy - created under a law that took effect this year - and is projected to grow to $7 billion in revenues. The letter stresses that the "will of the people as expressed through ballot initiatives and legislative action" has led to 46 states with medical marijuana and nine states with adult use of the drug.
Trump's embrace of the bill is just another blow to his attorney general, who has been a longtime opponent of marijuana.
Kevin Sabet, the founder of New Jersey Responsible Approaches to Marijuana Policy, which opposes legalization, said the "perceived" benefits of permitting recreational use would be outweighed by the negative consequences. A bipartisan House companion bill, sponsored by Reps. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been explicit in his hostility to legalization efforts.
"My legislation is in line with what President Trump said on the campaign and what he and I have discussed several times since he was elected", Gardner said in a statement Friday.
Warren pushed back on the suggestion, voiced by a reporter, that the bill is unlikely to pass Congress in an election year, despite the president's backing. "States like MA have put a lot of work into implementing common sense marijuana regulations - and they have the right to enforce their own marijuana policies".
"The science is clear - medical marijuana treatments are effective", Warren said Thursday.
Russian Federation was expelled from what was then called the G8 in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine . Putin also welcomed Trump's call to bring Moscow back into the G-7 group of leading industrialised nations.
