Thai Navy SEALs later announced two more had been freed in what Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn called a "very smooth operation".

The eighth boy has now emerged from the cave where a soccer team and their coach have been trapped in Thailand. The most recent helicopter took off from the site at 7:55pm.

Authorities have been tightlipped about the progress of Monday's operation.

"The water level is not worrisome", he said, the paper reported.

The boys set out to explore the vast Tham Luang cave, which is known in the area as off-limits, after soccer practice on June 23. Seven boys remain trapped inside with their coach. Medics appeared to remove one person on a stretcher but hid the person's identity behind multiple white umbrellas. Its eighth floor has been reserved for the soccer team, their coach and their families - who have maintained a vigil by the cave's entrance while the boys have been underground.

Ambulances were on standby to receive the next batch of boys who are expected to be plucked from the cave.

Narongsak Osottanakorn, head of the rescue operation, said a team of divers went back into the cave Monday morning, local time.

The Australian foreign minister, Julie Bishop, said in a TV interview on Monday morning she believed the boys would be brought out in groups of four.

"I'm hoping for good news", he said.

A fifth boy was brought out earlier on Monday, a navy official said. It takes several hours.

As for the boys who have been rescued, they are in isolation and being monitored at a hospital for infection. The operation to get them out was supposed to resume only after new oxygen tanks could be placed along their route of escape, which is partially underwater.

The first four boys were rescued on Sunday and are in a stable condition in hospital.

Eight of 12 boys who were tapped inside a flooded cave in Thailand have now been brought to the surface following a second round of rescue operations on Monday. Musk said his submarine has eight handles, four in the front and four in the rear, and four air tank connections.

There was no immediate word on their conditions.

The boys have been brought out in pairs, each guided by two expert divers.

That makes for eight of the 13 people who have been trapped under increasingly unsafe conditions since late last month.

Workers have been labouring around the clock to pump water out of the cave, and authorities said Monday that heavy downpours overnight did not raise water levels inside.

Another video from Thai PBS showed an ambulance arriving at a hospital in the city of Chiang Rai, near the cave network.

Authorities have said the mission could take up to four days to complete and heavy rain is forecast in the coming days.

Even tech billionaire Elon Musk has been lending a helping hand.

The first kilometer is the hardest, CNN explains, as that's where the children have to navigate a narrow flooded channel.

Children look at pictures of students before relatives and friends pray for the 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach trapped inside a flooded cave, at Mesai Grace Church in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand, July 8, 2018. They began again at 11 am on Monday after the teams had stopped for the night to rest and to replenish equipment and oxygen supplies. Divers removed another boy about an hour later. They are then taken to hospital in Chiang Rai. Authorities say they want to get them out now, given the looming threat of more rain and floods.
