Chelsea have sacked manager Antonio Conte after winning the Premier League and FA Cup during his two seasons in London.

Having been left in the dark over his future for the entire summer, Conte resumed pre-season training with the squad on Monday and even led a session yesterday morning before the news was delivered and players were informed there would no longer be an afternoon workout.

Chelsea sacked Conte and nearly his entire staff at the club's Cobham training ground after the Italian took a morning session yesterday, with Sarri now on the brink of taking over.

"Sarri is close to being new Chelsea manager".

Conte's position has been under scrutiny since the middle of last season when relations with the board became strained amid a feeble title defence.

But he was replaced as manager of the Italian club by Carlo Ancelotti in May. "Great man, Great manager".

They had nothing on target until injury time at the end of the first 90 minutes, and former England winger Chris Waddle called their 23 penalized fouls a "disgrace".

During three years with Napoli, Sarri has not won a major honour but has guided the club to finishes of second, third and second again - behind Juventus in 2017-18.

The main reason for the prolonged saga has been compensation.

Conte departs a year before his contract was due to expire and will now be in line for £9million in compensation.

In any event, the working relationship between Conte and Chelsea is over - as soon as that is made public by the club, the appointment of Sarri, with Blues legend Gianfranco Zola as part of the backroom team, will nearly certainly follow shortly after.

Former Napoli boss Sarri is expected to be appointed as his successor.

Sarri has also presented a list of players he would like to sign.
