Trump met for two hours with Putin behind closed doors and later said the Russian president assured him that his country had not meddled in the 2016 election - an assurance he believed over the conclusion of USA intelligence that there was interference.
Trump declined to endorse the United States government's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, instead publicly embracing Putin's "extremely strong and powerful" denial.
"I accept our intelligence community's conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place", Trump said. "There was no collusion at all".
However, even while accepting the findings of intelligence agencies that Russian Federation had indeed meddled in the election, Trump maintained that there was no collusion by his campaign.
The Terminator star and former Republican governor of California, 70, said: "President Trump, I just saw your press conference with President Putin, and it was embarrassing".
Asked at a joint news conference with Putin if believed his Russian counterpart or his intelligence chiefs, Trump said he doesn't "see any reason" why Putin's government would have hacked the Democratic National Committee.
He revised some of his comments on Wednesday morning (NZT) - saying "The sentence should have been, 'I don't see any reason why I wouldn't, or why it wouldn't be Russia" instead of "why it would". "It could be other people also", he said.
Trump says his administration is working to secure America's election systems and keep Russian Federation from interfering in the 2018 midterm elections.

Trump, who was given numerous opportunities to publicly rebuke Putin during the news conference in Helsinki, instead praised the Russian leader for his "strong and powerful" denial of the conclusions of U.S. intelligence agencies that the Russian state meddled in the election.
In fact, the reaction back home was immediate and visceral, among fellow Republicans as well as usual Trump critics. He walked off stage in Helsinki with little inkling his remarks would cause the firestorm they did, and was instead enthusiastic about what he felt was a successful summit.

While Trump has faced intense criticism over Helsinki, he is not entirely without defenders.
Ahead of the meeting, staffers provided Trump with some 100 pages of briefing materials aimed at laying out a tough posture towards Putin, but the President ignored most of it, according to one person familiar with the discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
