‘Blood moon’: How to watch the longest lunar eclipse of the century

  • Blood moon to appear for 21st century's longest lunar eclipse

The eclipse, said to be the longest in the 21st century, will see the moon pass through Earth's darkest shadow and take on a red sheen. The totality period of the eclipse will last for one hour and 42 minutes, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

It should also be at least partially visible from Europe, Australia, South America and most of eastern Asia, although the total eclipse phase will not last as long. Thus, there is a possibility that the clouds may hide your view of the eclipse. For that reason, lunar eclipses separated by a full Saros cycle have similar features, including the time of the year and the distance of the Moon from the Earth.

The Moon will pass right through the centre of the Earth's shadow, at the shadow's widest point. This occurs when an eclipsed moon can be seen on one horizon, while the rising sun can be observed on the other. This is when the moon is completely inside the Earth's shadow and is the most spectacular part of the lunar eclipse.

Those who live in the Middle East, eastern Africa, southern Asia and India will have the best views of the spectacle.

In Thailand, the total eclipse will be visible from 2:30am to 4:13am local time on July 28.

'However instead of turning black as you might expect, the atmosphere of the Earth bends the light of the sun onto the moon causing it to turn a deep red colour'. This is why the moon will appear red during the eclipse, and is therefore sometimes nicknamed a "blood moon".
