Boys Rescued From Flooded Cave In Thailand

  • A military helicopter believed to be carrying rescued schoolboys takes off near Tham Luang cave complex in the northern province of Chiang Rai

The first of the boys trapped inside a cave in Thailand have been brought out by rescuers, reports say.

Expert divers entered the sprawling complex for the complicated and unsafe mission.

The rescue teams now needed at least 10 hours to prepare for their next operation, involving about 90 divers in total, 50 of them from foreign countries, he said.

The entire operation to get all 13 out of the cave could last two to four days, depending on weather and water conditions, army Maj.

Chiang Rai acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, who is heading the rescue, had said the second phase began at 11 a.m. Monday and authorities "hope to hear good news in the next few hours". The parents will not be allowed to hug or touch the boys until blood tests come back in about two days, officials said Tuesday.

Authorities in northern Chiang Rai province began the unsafe mission to bring out the 12 boys and their coach earlier on Sunday.

Responding to a question on Twitter, the entrepreneur and engineering mastermind said "divers who have made the passage", believe the pod is small enough to fit through the most narrow portions of the cave.

Thai authorities have confirmed that four members of the football team that was left stranded in a cave have now been rescued. "We have to be 100 percent confident that there is no risk to the boys before we evacuate", provincial governor Narongsak Osottanakorn said.

The boys, all members of the Wild Boars soccer team between the ages of 11 and 16, and their 25-year-old coach Ekkapol Chantawong were trapped inside Tham Luang cave on June 23 when sudden rains flooded their exit.

It is expected that the operation will continue in the next 12 hours.

"Air tanks and systems have to be put in place again", he added.

Eight of boys and the coach remained inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex as authorities paused the global effort until Monday to replenish air tanks along the treacherous exit route. They eventually found a dry landing spot, where they waited for nine days before being found by two British divers.

Musk first tweeted about the boys trapped in the cave on 4 July after somebody asked him if he would assist. Thirteen medical teams were stationed outside the cave on Sunday -each with its own helicopter and ambulance - one for each of 12 boys and their coach. And many of them are experienced cave divers, which certainly helps because this is a very risky operation.

"It is important to appreciate that the United Kingdom cave divers continue to work alongside the Thai Navy SEAL divers and a combination of cave divers and open water divers from many other nations", the statement said. In addition to treatment areas, the hospital will also provide reunion rooms for the young boys and their families.

A frantic rescue mission was hatched in the week since they were found.
