According to the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA), a total eclipse of the moon will take place this Friday, 27 July...

As the moon rises on Friday, the longest lunar eclipse of this century will begin, offering skywatchers the chance to view over four hours of the moon crossing the Earth's shadow with close to two hours of complete eclipse.

"A blood moon is what we call a solar lunar eclipse".

The next total lunar eclipse visible in the US will be on January 21, 2019, according to NASA, and will occur during a super moon.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the lunar eclipse will begin in the wee hours of July 28 morning. This glorious sight occurs because of the way sunlight bends (refracts) through the Earth's atmosphere.

The moon will be low on our horizon when it starts to go dark and it will set while completely immersed in a dull-red stain. In other cultures, the eclipse is seen as the moon being swallowed by other animals, such as a jaguar in Mayan tradition, or a three-legged toad in China. Instead of light hitting the moon's surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.

When the full moon moves into Earth's shadow, it will darken, but it won't disappear.

As well as being abnormally long, this eclipse, like most lunar eclipses, will appear a deep red with the sun's rays entering through the earth's atmosphere to project a blood-like glow onto the moon.

"The longest possible period for a full moon eclipse is 1 hour 47 minutes", Angkasa deputy director-general Samsuddin Omar told Bernama. The blood moon and Mars inversion do not require the aid of special eyewear.

However, during a lunar eclipse the glow from the moon is not almost as strong. "A Blue Moon is the second full moon during a calendar month", said Duari, who also termed the year 2018 as "a year of lunar eclipses".

But there is some bad news: If you're in North America, you won't be able to see it yourself (but there will be live video online). The last time Mars was bigger and brighter than this was in 2003, when it was less than 56 million kilometres away from Earth. Mars is also safe to view with the naked eye.

Some say the lunar eclipse is the end of the world Doomsday preachers have been suggesting that the blood moon heralds the end of the world, as biblical passages talk about the moon turning the colour of blood prior to the apocalypse.
