Prime Day is huge for Amazon fans who like to shop online, but today's sales and discounts won't exactly be easy to browse, as the Amazon website experienced a crash nearly immediately after Prime Day went live, and current links to sale item categories are not working as intended.

Amazon said that the prime Day sales in the USA continue to be bigger than ever - in fact, in the first 10 hours, Prime Day grew even faster, year-over-year, than the first 10 hours last year.

Among the best-selling products were several of Amazon's own, including the Fire TV stick and the Echo Dot.

Amazon said it signed up more new Prime members on July 16 than any on previous day in the company's history.

For the first time, members in Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands and Luxembourg participated in Prime Day.

Amazon, which recently announced that Prime membership would be getting more expensive, was hoping to lure in shoppers by focusing on new products and having Whole Foods be part of the process. Despite some website outages shortly after Prime Day got under way, sales in the first 12 hours skyrocketed 89% versus the same time span a year earlier, according to published reports citing data from e-commerce specialist Feedvisor.

Twitter lit up with screen shots of Amazon's Prime Day failures, which featured photos of dogs and the words "sorry". CIRP pegs Amazon's current U.S. Prime membership at 95 million.

The world's largest online retailer said it recorded the largest daily sales for its Echo range of smart speakers, helped by heavy discounts.

In the United States, Prime Day had a brick-and-mortar component in 2018 with a week of savings offers at Whole Foods Market stores.

Workers in Amazon's Germany, Poland, and Spain-based warehouses have gone on strike during Prime Day, and the timing is far from coincidental.

Large retailers ($1B+ in annual revenue) saw a 54% increase in sales versus an average Tuesday but niche retailers ( $5M in annual revenue) saw a 18% decrease in online sales on Prime Day. Prime Day is a benefit exclusive to Prime members, which means non-Prime customers had to subscribe to the service - albeit with an optional 30-day free trial - to access the deals.

When do the Prime Day 2018 sales start?

"Prime Day deals continue until midnight ... across all 23 categories, from toys and gaming consoles, to fashion and books, with deep discounts continuing throughout the day". Walmart's price matching policy covers lower prices from online retailers on an identical, in-stock product, including Amazon, and will price adjust after the fact (although this may vary by location). Shoppers were expected to spend $3.4 billion on Amazon during the promotion, up more than 40 percent from last year's Prime Day, according to Coresight Research.
