England ended their World Cup penalties misery with a 4-3 win shootout against Colombia in Moscow, a success that saw them claim victory from spot kicks for the first time since 1996.

Extra-time came and went as the match went to penalties, where the Three Lions won the shootout and their first knockout match since 2006.

England boss Gareth Southgate has urged his team not to look further than the Round of 16 clash with Colombia.

The stadium shook in the third minute of stoppage time as Colombia defender Yerry Mina rose above the crowd and directed a powerful header off the ground and past Pickford.

England striker Harry Kane was rested in the Belgium defeat but is still top of the goal-scoring charts in Russian Federation, with five goals in two matches.

England advance to face Sweden in the quarterfinals on Sunday (NZ time). We have to concentrate one game at a time.

"We are the youngest team left in and we are the most inexperienced team left in, but we've got some old fogeys as well who help the younger ones to get through it and show super leadership", Southgate said.

Coach Jose Pekerman is now fretting over the fitness of key playmaker James Rodriguez who was withdrawn in last Thursday's 1-0 win over Senegal as "Los Cafeteros" secured qualification to the knock-out stages as group winners.

He added that England has taken note of how Colombia beat Poland 3-0 in the group stage and "we've got to make sure that our work without the ball is spot on" to avoid being punished on the counter.

But just eight minutes into the second half, England were handed a glorious chance to break the deadlock as Carlos Sanchez was penalised for wrestling Kane to the ground inside the box.

Colombia reached the quarter-finals in Brazil four years ago, which was their best ever performance in the World Cup.

England's players fumed and Harry Maguire called for the video assistant referee, yet referee Geiger inexplicably only handed out a booking when information came through his headset.

The South Americans vehemently protested the decision, but the penalty stood and the Tottenham man sent goalkeeper David Ospina the wrong way to hand England the lead.

With an aim to book a quarter-final berth, England will take on Colombia on Tuesday in Moscow.

Can Colombia pass the England challenge?

"It's early, but whatever happens now in this World Cup - whether we go out tomorrow or we go on and win it - the fans and the media back home, I think they need to get behind these lads". It should be a close game, with England having the advantage.
