Rosenstein, the No. 2-ranked official at the department, oversees special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's meddling of the 2016 presidential election after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself past year. They have expressed anger with what they say is Rosenstein's lack of cooperation in providing documents related to the Russian Federation investigation to Congress.

Perhaps the most important show of support, however, came from House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who rejected the impeachment effort that Pelosi characterized as a thinly-veiled move to derail Russian Federation special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing inquiry, which Rosenstein oversees.

During an appearance in Boston, Sessions said Rosenstein had his "highest confidence" and referred to to his top deputy as "highly capable".

George Scott, Perry's opponent for the 10th district in November's election, released a statement today speaking highly of Rosenstein and criticizing his opponents decision. Conservative members led by Reps. It is not filed as a privileged resolution, so the odds of it ever coming to a vote are extremely long, assuming Ryan doesn't disincorporate entirely. Gowdy, who is opposed to trying to impeach Rosenstein, told reporters afterward that he thought the meeting had been productive "because we're making progress towards compliance". The impeachment effort is led by North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, who talks to Trump frequently and often defends him to colleagues.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC also dismissed the possibility, saying it's "more likely" he'd end up "in the NBA playing basketball" than Rosenstein is to be impeached.

It is also expected to force key Republican leaders to choose sides after many of them have sought to distance themselves from the controversial President's moves to protect himself.

"It is a panicked and unsafe attempt to undermine an ongoing criminal investigation in an effort to protect President Trump as the walls are closing in around him and his associates", the top Democrats on the House Judiciary, Oversight and Government Reform, and Intelligence panels said in a joint statement.

Wednesday's resolution had nine cosponsors, though notably not conservative House leadership such as Trey Gowdy, chair of the Oversight Committee, and Bob Goodlatte, chair of the Judiciary Committee. President Donald Trump has fumed about Mueller's probe and repeatedly called it a "witch hunt".

A Justice Department official said the agency had no comment.

"The DOJ is keeping information from Congress".

For his part, Mr. Rosenstein has thumbed his nose at the lawmakers. Meadows said after that meeting that there was still "frustration" with how Justice has handled the oversight requests.

"Information has been hidden, efforts have been stonewalled", Meadows said during an appearance on Fox News Wednesday night.

Democratic Reps. Jerrold Nadler of New York, Elijah Cummings of Maryland and Adam Schiff of California said Rosenstein "stands as one of the few restraints against the overreaches of the president and his allies in Congress".

Justice Department officials maintain that lawmakers have been provided with almost all the documents requested by the House Judiciary subpoena from March and that they have been trying to accommodate incoming requests from House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes.
