Secretary of State Mike Pompeo left Thursday for North Korea in search of commitments and possible timetables from the Pyongyang regime on denuclearization and the return of remains of US troops missing from the 1950-53 Korean War.

It was unclear whether Cho would meet with Kim or Pompeo, the unification ministry said. Add North Korea as an interest to stay up to date on the latest North Korea news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Pompeo last visited in May ahead of the Trump-Kim summit and traveled to Pyongyang secretly in early April while he was director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

As for reported government leaks about North Korea's intention to denuclearize, Morell said, "I would imagine that there is some concern among officials, particularly on the policy side, that the president will only negotiate on what Kim and the North Koreans have before acknowledged to the International Atomic Energy Agency, right, acknowledged to the international community". We both hope that's true,"Pompeo said on Twitter after a phone call with Trump in the air".

"Our leaders made commitments at the Singapore summit on the complete denuclearization of North Korea and outlined what a transformed US-DPRK relationship could look like", he said while still en route, according to comments relayed to reporters on his plane by spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

Mr Pompeo would try to agree on at least an initial list of nuclear sites and an inventory that could be checked against the available intelligence, U.S. intelligence officials told Reuters.

Officials were also expected to hash out the return of the remains of USA soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War. "If so, then this expansion is just business as usual for the North Koreans", Schmerler says.

Four other US officials said the Hermit Kingdom was purposely trying to mislead the U.S.

"Goodwill gestures between the Koreas can be compared to rocking back and forth in a rocking chair - it feels good, but you aren't really moving forward", said Bong Young-shik, a North Korea expert at Yonsei University in Seoul.

Ahead of the summit, Pompeo said Trump would reject anything short of "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation".

Shortly after his North Korea visit, Pompeo will fly to Tokyo for a trilateral meeting with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts - Kang Kyung-wha and Taro Kono - this weekend.

Several times past year, Trump referred to the dictator as "little rocket man", while Kim reciprocated by labelling the president a "mentally deranged dotard".

Kim has also met with China's President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. "We are watching closely".

At the world team championships in May, North and South Korea were due to face each other in the women's quarter-finals - but they were given permission to form a joint team instead, losing to Japan in the semi-finals.
