Trump defends Jim Jordan amid allegations of sex abuse on wrestling team

  • Jim Jordan Denies Reports He Hid Sexual Abuse at Ohio State

Yetts, 47, of Steubenville, said Strauss groped him at least three times during routine exams when he wrestled in the early to mid-1990s.

As ThinkProgress previously noted, Jordan has always been thought to be a top contender to replace House Speaker Paul Ryan, once Ryan steps down in November, and enjoys the full support of several high-profile members of Congress, as well as the president himself. Jordan is also being contradicted regarding what he knew and when he knew it by several men who were part of the Ohio State wrestling program in the 90s, including a handful who say that they were subjected to what was clearly sexual abuse by the team doctor, who has since passed away, that Jordan was well aware of what was going on, and that he failed to report the matter to either law enforcement or to higher-up university officials.

Another accuser and former wrestler at Ohio State University, Dunyasha Yetts, told NBC News that he and other teammates told Jordan about Strauss multiple times.

A law firm representing Ohio State University says an investigative team unsuccessfully sought an interview with an Ohio congressman about sex abuse allegations at the university two decades ago.

"Jim knew this - there's no ifs, ands or buts", Michael DiSabato, one of the former wrestlers named in the NBC account, said Tuesday in an interview.

President Donald Trump backed up Jordan on Thursday, saying he believed Jordan didn't know about any sexual abuse.

He added, "We not only stand by him, but believe him to be a man of character and honor, and Congress would be well served to have more Jim Jordans serving on Capitol Hill".

GOP Compromise Immigration Bill Fails In House
Several House conservatives left a closed-door meeting of Republicans early on Tuesday expressing discontent with the broad bill. That was defeated 230-190, with Republicans calling it a distraction from the bigger debate over illegal immigration.

"We knew of no abuse, never heard of abuse. Never heard of abuse", Jordan said.

"Obviously, we'll talk with whoever is doing the investigation" to obtain justice for any victims, he said. He said that Mr. Jordan asked him not to get him involved.

DiSabato said he had forwarded Jordan a screenshot of a message he saw from former Ohio State football player Matt Finkes - whom he identified as Jordan's cousin.

According to a source within Jordan's office, the congressman planned to contact police over repeated emails from DiSabato, which he reportedly said constitute "bullying". "The accusations that have been made by these couple of people who I don't know are...not consistent with the Jim Jordan I've come to know and admire and certainly not consistent what Jim espouses every day when nobody's looking", Meadows said, speaking with the Washington Examiner. But those NBC News spoke with say that just isn't so. "If we had, we would have reported it", Jordan told reporters on Wednesday. "It was very common knowledge in the locker room that if you went to Dr. Strauss for anything, you would have to pull your trousers down".

Dailey told NBC News, "It was very common knowledge in the locker room that if you went to Dr. Strauss for anything, you would have to pull your trousers down", and that Jordan was present when this was discussed.

"I said, 'Yeah. Not for an hour, doc, ' " the former coach says.
