The Toronto Star reported Wednesday that Hussain worked at the same Loblaws supermarket chain as two of the shooting victims - Reese Fallon, the 18-year-old killed in the attack, and Samantha Price, who was wounded.

The attack in Canada's largest city came three months after a 25-year-old man in a rented truck mowed down pedestrians along iconic Yonge Street, killing 10 and injuring 15.

Police Chief Mark Saunders said he would not speculate on the motive for Sunday's attack.

"We will continue to explore every investigative avenue, including interviewing those who knew Mr Hussain, reviewing his online activity, and looking into his experiences with mental health", police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray said.

An army of police, paramedics and other emergency personnel soon descended on the scene, while area residents, some in pyjamas, emerged from their homes to see what was happening.

A couple of weeks ago, the city of Toronto announced a deployment of about 200 police officers in response to the spike in shootings. "When you have this many people struck by gunfire it's a grave concern". On Tuesday evening, after almost 10 hours of discussing gun crimes, the City Council voted to urge the federal and provincial government to ban the sale of handguns and handgun ammunition in the largest city in Canada, and the fourth largest in North America.
