Police Chief Mark Saunders said he would not speculate on the motive for Sunday's attack.

"We will continue to explore every investigative avenue, including interviewing those who knew Mr Hussain, reviewing his online activity, and looking into his experiences with mental health", police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray said.

An army of police, paramedics and other emergency personnel soon descended on the scene, while area residents, some in pyjamas, emerged from their homes to see what was happening.
