Sen. Sasse Calls Out Colleagues for Predicting Sessions Will Be Fired

  • Jeff Sessions: US attorney general hits back at Trump

At the U.S. Capitol, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who is both close to Trump and a defender of Sessions, said he believed Trump would appoint a new attorney general but should wait until after November congressional elections.

During the Fox interview, Trump declined to say whether he plans to fire Sessions, a move that even some Republicans have cautioned Trump not to make. Open up the papers & documents without redaction?

Responding to Sessions" declaration that he would not be influenced by politics, Trump tweeted that Sessions must "look into all of the corruption on the "other side, '" adding: "Come on Jeff, you can do it, the country is waiting!"

Trump listed people and political enemies who he believes deserve the attention of the Justice Department, including the targets of conservative conspiracy theories that claim the Russian Federation investigation was motivated by politics.

That represents a significant shift from Graham's stance a year ago, when he warned Trump publicly that if he fired Sessions "there will be holy hell to pay".

But as Mueller's probe took wing, Trump's frustration grew and he came to resent Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the probe - for not being forthcoming about his own contacts with Russians - and said he would never have appointed Sessions for the job if he knew about the recusal.

The tweet follows a week in which former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was found guilty of eight financial crimes, the first trial victory by prosecutors in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Mr. Trump's associates.

"When everybody sees what's going on in the Justice Department, I always put "justice" now with quotes", Trump said.

"What kind of man is this?"

In another tweet, Trump also pointed to the Justice Department's sentencing a former USA intelligence contractor to 63 months for leaking information about Russian meddling.

However, Trump told "Fox & Friends" he would "stay uninvolved" in department matters.

Under pressure over the Cohen and Manafort cases, Trump has renewed his criticism of Sessions and reprised his complaints about the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accusing them without providing evidence of treating him and his supporters unfairly. This was really the sort of declaration of independence that we traditionally expect from the Department of Justice, but it was a stern rebuke to the president, who expects his attorney general to act as sort of his personal interference section. Cohen's statement directly implicated Trump's role in payments that Cohen had made to keep two women silent who have said they had sexual relationships with Trump. "I demand the highest standards, and where they are not met, I take action", he had declared.

That has made it almost impossible for Sessions to obey Trump's demands to "stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now", as Trump tweeted on Aug 1. And he talked about his efforts to advance the president's legal agenda on things like immigration enforcement and what the White House calls religious liberty.
