In a diplomatic gesture to Pyongyang in June, Trump suspended what he called "war games" with South Korea, saying he believed Kim "wants to get it done" on denuclearisation.
The move was broadly criticized as a premature concession to North Korea, which has appeared to resist USA moves to persuade it to give up its nuclear weapons. At the time, Trump cited lack of progress on denuclearization as the reason. Weeks before the games, the US had held the wing-level exercise Beverly Herd - which officials at the time characterized as "non-major" - with counterparts at Osan Air Base.
'The Department of Defense suspended three individual military exercises in order to provide space for our diplomats to negotiate the verifiable, irreversible and complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, ' Mattis said in a statement.

Often the North has reacted to the exercises with its own demonstrations of military might, including firing a new intermediate-range missile over Japan previous year as a countermeasure to the drills.
North Korea sent emails that could hack into cryptocurrency exchanges and their customers' private information and stole (cryptocurrency) worth billions of won.
Mattis' announcement seemed to indicate the US government is taking a harder line on North Korea, but he clarified that USA officials have not yet decided whether to proceed with next year's Ulchi Freedom Guardian or other training events, such as Foal Eagle. RFA, yet another news agency, reported that following the full length of the conference, North Korea intends to bring world-renowned blockchain and cryptocurrencies experts into the same room to meet with NK business executives. He said that the tone of the letter was "if you're not willing to give something, then don't come".
