  • Back us not Brussels on Iran, US ambassador tells Theresa May as he warns British businesses will lose trade

Iran has denounced the sanctions as "US unilateralism".

Woody Johnson said that America's "closest ally" should reverse its position.

Trump slapped the first round of sanctions on the Islamic Regime last week that targets Iran's purchasing of U.S. dollars, trading in precious metals and its automotive sector.

On May 8, the US President Donald Trump unlawfully pulled out of Iran nuclear deal and re-imposed sanctions on the country.

In an article for The Sunday Telegraph Mr Johnson told British companies to stop doing business with Iran...

The UK, France, Russia, China, Germany and the European Union, which also signed the deal, have criticized Trump's decision and continue to back the agreement with Iran.

Tensions between Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani have ratcheted up in recent months amid USA -imposed sanctions on Iran.

"Until then, America is turning up the pressure and we want the United Kingdom by our side", Johnson wrote in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

Iran had also warned a year ago that it enjoyed the capability to restore its uranium enrichment operations and even develop its capacity to 100,000 SWUs (Separative Work Units) if the nuclear deal with the world powers failed as a result of the United States non-compliance with its undertakings.

Trump has described the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as a "horrible, one sided" agreement.

Abadi on August 7 said he did not agree with the renewed US sanctions but added that he would abide by them to protect his country's interests and risk retaliatory actions by Washington.

Burt said the deal was an important part of regional security and that, with the European Union, the government was trying to protect British companies from the U.S. sanctions when dealing with Iran. She is struggling to quell rebellions within the ranks of her Conservative party over Brexit negotiations and she can't afford to alienate Brussels further by siding with Washington on the Iran nuclear deal, say analysts.
