  • British Airways breach sees hackers take-off with customers' payment details

BA says the breach is now resolved, but customers may have had their personal and financial information exposed if they made bookings in the last couple of weeks.

BA chairman and chief executive, Alex Cruz, said the carrier was "deeply sorry" for the disruption caused by the criminal activity.

British Airways is promising to compensate customers after reporting a major hack of its website that compromised credit card information of roughly 380,000 travelers. "No passport or travel details were stolen".

It advised them to contact their bank or credit card provider and follow their recommended advice. The airline says it's working with authorities to investigate the data exposure.

The recommendation does not apply to customers who bought tickets or changed reservations outside those times.

The airline is facing a backlash from customers who have had to cancel cards following the 15-day data breach.

Complaining about British Airways is something of a national pastime.

But hackers were able to access customers' names, email addresses and credit card information, according to law enforcement authorities in the United Kingdom.

Assuring compensation to each of the affected customers, the airline offered to pay for the credit checking service.

In July, BA apologised after IT issues caused dozens of flights in and out of Heathrow Airport to be cancelled.

This is not the first customer relations problem to affect the airline in recent times, the BBC said.

It said in a recorded message that its security systems would likely stop any fraud as a result of the hack but anyone affected should look out for unusual activity on their accounts.

The London-listed group, which is also the owner of Irish airline Aer Lingus and Spanish carrier Vueling, added that total revenues swelled 3 per cent to €11.2 billion.
