Erdogan warns of 'massacre' in Syria's Idlib

The Syrian military shelled the last stronghold of active rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday as a war monitor said insurgents blew up another bridge in anticipation of a government offensive.

His comments come as Syrian troops mass near the northwestern region of Idlib for a major assault that is raising fears of a humanitarian catastrophe on a scale not yet seen in the seven-year-old conflict.

Since May 2017, Idlib has been protected by a partial ceasefire following a de-escalation agreement between Turkey, Iran, and Russian Federation. A Sukhoi-35S fighter eliminated a warehouse of portable anti-aircraft missiles, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told the media on Wednesday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Tuesday that at least nine civilians, including five children from the same family, were killed in the Russian raids, while 10 more people were wounded. Even so, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov said that such an attack will be blamed on Damascus and will "serve as another reason for the U.S., the United Kingdom and France to hit Syrian government targets with air strikes".

The Syrian government denies ever using chemical weapons.

Turkey, which has a small military presence in observation posts it has erected along the frontlines between rebels and government forces, reiterated its warnings against an offensive.

Erdogan as well as the presidents of Iran and Russian Federation will meet on Friday in Tehran for a summit expected to focus on Idlib.

The prospect of an offensive in Idlib has alarmed humanitarian agencies.

"Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed".

She warned on Tuesday against the use of any chemical weapons in Idlib, after the White House pledged to "respond swiftly and appropriately" to any such attack.

Idlib is held by a complex array of rebels and jihadists, many of whom have been blacklisted as "terrorists" by world powers.

Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said on Tuesday the UN Security Council would meet on Friday to discuss the precarious situation in the province.

Several other factions in Idlib, including some that fought under the banner of the Free Syrian Army, this year joined together into a new alliance backed by Turkey.

The US senator also lauded the return of life to many areas liberated from the scourge of terrorism, hoping that peace and stability would prevail all across Syria and terrorism is defeated.
