Williams is competing in her 31st Grand Slam final whilst this is Osaka's first foray into the showpiece of a major tournament.

Watching from Tokyo, 60-year-old tennis fan Kiyoshi Ogawa praised Osaka's humility: "She tried to make all the attention go to Serena".

"I know you guys were here rooting for me, and we'll get through it".

"So for me, I'm always going to remember the Serena that I love", Osaka said.

The US Open has already been dogged by allegations of sexism after French player Alize Cornet received a code violation for changing her top on court after realising it was back to front.

"I just want to tell you guys she played well".

The second code violation cost Williams a point, meaning Naomi Osaka had a 15-0 even before hitting her first serve in the sixth game of the second set. I'm just a tennis player playing another tennis player. "But the way she tries to speak in Japanese is so cute", said Yukie Ohashi, a 41-year-old Tokyo resident. Then she got a point penalty for smashing her racket and finally earned a game penalty at 4-3 down for a verbal attack, calling Ramos a "liar" and a "thief".

"Serena came to the bench and told me she had a point penalty and when she got the game penalty I didn't know that either", added Osaka.

When Ariana Miyamoto, the daughter of an African-American man and Japanese woman, was selected to represent Japan in the 2015 Miss Universe contest, the move was widely criticised on social media, with some saying she did not look truly Japanese.

Lionel Messi: 'Cristiano Ronaldo makes Juventus Champions League favourites'
Real midfielder Luka Modric was named the World Cup 2018's player of the tournament as Croatia reached the final against France . Lionel Messi has admitted he was surprised by Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to leave Real Madrid and join Juventus .

"Because I know that, like, she really wanted to have the 24th Grand Slam, right?" "I can't sit here and say I wouldn't say he's a thief, because I thought he took a game from me". Between Indian Wells and here I haven't really done that well, but I think just to regain that mentality coming into this tournament, I feel really proud of myself and I know that I do really well here.

She beat Williams in their first meeting, at the Miami Open earlier this year, and she proved it wasn't a fluke this time around.

"I texted Patrick (to ask) what is he talking about". I'm just really happy I was able to win. I had one more to go still.

"I was on the far other end, so I'm not sure". In a semi-final against Kim Clijsters in 2009, she was penalised for threatening a line judge and put on a two-year probation.

Serena, troubled by the docked point, lost her serve again as Osaka took a 4-3 and it was after that things took a worse turn.

Billie Jean King, the namesake of the tennis center where the U.S. Open is now played, fought for prize parity in the '70s.

Osaka sealed her first major with a thumping serve out wide.

Despite having time to comprehend what happened during the match, Williams was not backing down from her comments on the court afterwards.

Osaka spent the formative years of her childhood living in NY and first came to Flushing Meadows as a fan hoping to catch a glimpse of Williams. For tonight, it is time to celebrate these two awesome players, both of whom have great integrity."Naomi is a deserving champion and Serena at all times plays with class and makes us proud".
