Jon Kyl sworn in as senator replacing McCain

  • Former Sen. Jon Kyl to replace Mc Cain in Senate

As Ducey's tweet suggested, Kyl is a guaranteed vote for Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump's Supreme Court pick, already serving as Kavanaugh's "sherpa" through the confirmation process.

Once he is sworn in Wednesday, Kyl will cast crucial votes in the coming weeks on Kavanaugh's nomination, government spending and possibly billions for a U.S. -Mexico border wall and perhaps another round of tax cuts.

Kyl is headed to Washington, D.C. today. McCain died August 25 after a long struggle with brain cancer. Then the seat will be up again for a full six-year term.

Ducey took to Twitter, adding, "I am deeply grateful to Senator Kyl for agreeing to succeed his friend and colleague of so many years".

In the end, Ducey, R, chose perhaps the one candidate who could satisfy all the competing camps: Jon Kyl, a former Arizona senator who in his retirement has at times voiced criticism of Trump's style but whose shepherding of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has also landed him in the good graces of the White House.

The GOP is hoping he'll be a more reliable partisan vote than McCain, whose opposition to a partial repeal of President Obama's health care law pitched the party into turmoil previous year.

Kyl's appointment restores Republicans to 51-49 control of the chamber which they'll need for the upcoming vote on Judge Kavanaugh. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, in Phoenix. "There is much unfinished business, including confirmation of President Trump's nominees for judicial and executive branch positions, and I look forward to getting to work on behalf of my fellow Arizonans", said Senator Jon Kyl.

Kyl's entire career in Washington overlapped with McCain's, and he served with the state's senior senator for three terms before stepping down.

US, Mexico trade pact will occur with or without Canada
Republicans also face mid-term elections in November and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a national one expected by October 2019. Canada has been absent from the NAFTA bargaining table since trilateral talks paused last spring.

Kyl will likely also vote on bills containing tens of billions of dollars for Defense Department programs after he represented defense giant Northrop Grumman.

The appointment was tweeted by McCain's widow, Cindy.

"It's a great tribute to John that he is prepared to go back into public service to help the state of Arizona", she said. "His patience, for example, his meticulous preparation and thoroughness, are, I'm sorry to say, not qualities that I'll be remembered for, but they've been indispensable to the people of our state". "Honors his legacy while putting some major horsepower for Arizona in the seat, at least for now", he said.

"I will not seek this seat in 2020, nor any other office in the future", Kyl said.

The governor of Arizona announced Tuesday that he will appoint former Sen.

The race pits Republican Rep. Martha McSally against Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema. And if Kyl were to leave before November 2020, Ducey would have to name another caretaker for the seat.

Filling McCain's seat marks a turning point in Arizona political history. "John and I served the people of Arizona for almost two decades, and in that spirit, along with Senator Flake, I will do my best to ensure Arizonans are well represented in the Senate".
