The American superstar claimed that chair umpire Carlos Ramos meted out penalties for infractions that male players could have gotten away with.

The governing body of women's tennis has come out in support of the 23-time grand slam champion after she was fined $17,000 (£13,000) for an extraordinary outburst during her straight sets defeat to Naomi Osaka.

On Sunday, a day after the match, the tournament referee's office docked Williams US$10,000 for "verbal abuse" of chair umpire Carlos Ramos, US$4,000 for being warned for coaching, and US$3,000 for breaking her racket. As tennis great Billie Jean King writes, Ramos "chose to give Williams very little latitude in a match where the stakes were highest".

Since the match on Saturday night, the sport has found itself embroiled in a sexism row over the double standards at play when it comes to the difference in the way male and female players are penalised.

"She is the voice for so many of us", Rowland said.

"Naomi won one of the Grand Slam tournaments, but I want her to become a tennis player who is modest and not arrogant".

"Top umpires have to be able to withstand the pressures put on them by top players who do not own the court, who have to play by the same rules and code of conduct as the qualifier, the new finalist and the softly spoken player", Morrissey said.

After the match, Mouratoglou admitted: "I was coaching ..." "I really felt for her [Saturday]".

"We have long understood the importance of using data and insights to improve connections with our fans, players, coaches and the rest of the tennis community and we look forward to working with Infosys to change the way we all experience our great sport in the future".

When the violation was announced Williams approached Ramos to say she never takes coaching and would rather lose than "cheat to win".

Serena Williams argues with the chair umpire during a match against Naomi Osaka, of Japan, during the women's finals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, in NY. The first concerned the match between Andy Murray and Fernando Verdasco, where Murray complained to officials that Verdasco had illegitimately conversed with his coach during an "extreme heat" break. Nobody has ever seen anything like it: An umpire so wrecked a big occasion that both players, Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams alike, wound up distraught with tears streaming down their faces during the trophy presentation and an incensed crowd screamed boos at the court. He's never taken a game from a man, because he said thief.

On Twitter however, women said they were sadly unsurprised by what went down arguing that this debate is about so much more than tennis, but how women, especially black women, are treated in day-to-day life. Simon believes that coaching should be allowed across the events and regardless of gender. The row escalated and she was given a third violation for her conduct, which resulted in a game penalty.

That is exactly how a champion should behave because she wanted it so badly. The suggestion of one columnist that Ramos' position in a high chair during the match was itself a symbol of entrenched privilege overlooks the very reason for such positioning: the official is required to have a perspective on the match that the committed competitors can not. They've been called a lot more. It's a tough thing for a chair umpire to deal with.

"You can't act like that and not get given a warning".
