Obama urges voters to mobilize against the 'politics of fear'

The former President opened up with a more traditional historical digression about the progress and missteps of American history, but it didn't take him long to name-drop Trump - something Obama has mostly avoided since he left office - saying that Trump is a "symptom, not the cause" of the hatred and anger now gripping parts of the country.

Obama campaigned for congressional Democrats from California on Saturday, a day after he excoriated Trump in a speech in IL.

Democrats certainly hope so as the midterms loom, with candidates reportedly flooding Obama's advisers with requests for personal appearances on the campaign trail.

"President Obama believes the solution to our long-term challenges can be best addressed when we all fully participate in our democracy".

Trump appeared unshook by Obama's speech.

His comments come as Obama delivered a speech damning Donald Trump for "capitalising on resentment that politicians have been fanning for years".

Pirro said Saturday that Obama ran the most corrupt presidential administration since Harry Truman.

He also criticised Mr Trump's response to the violence previous year at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that resulted in the death of one person. "He is a symptom, not the cause".

"You happen to be coming of age", Obama told students at the University of IL at Urbana Champaign.

College Makes Clear Just How Much They Don't Like Nike's Kaepernick Campaign
Even if it means sacrificing everything" read the Nike ad, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of its "Just Do It" campaign. I don't think it's appropriate what they did.

Obama's comments came during a speech at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign, where he accepted an ethics in government award.

In a notable moment that seemed made for a split screen television, nearly at the same time Obama was issuing these remarks, Trump was telling reporters on Air Force One he wants Attorney General Jeff Sessions to investigate the anonymous author of the op-ed.

The speech was a preview of the argument that Mr Obama is likely to make until the USA midterm elections in November.

"Don't tell me your vote doesn't matter", he said in IL.

Obama asked, "Its central organizing principle in foreign policy was the fight against Communism, and now they're cozying up to the former head of the KGB, actively blocking legislation that would defend our elections from Russian attack".

UPDATE: 2:47 P.M.: This article was updated with a statement from the Republican National Committee.

Cox, Democrats' nominee in CA-21, said that optimism was misplaced, and action necessary. "You can feel people saying, 'Oh, enough is enough, '" Obama said, whipping up the crowd. That's how real change starts, Obama said. And that is it. "All that matters ... is getting out there and voting".

On Saturday the former president stumped for candidates in California in the Democrats' bid to take back the House of Representatives.
