No matter what ultimately happens to Brett Kavanaugh and the women who accuse the Supreme Court nominee of sexual misconduct, the Senate hearing on the allegations will offer a historic test of the #MeToo movement, which began only a year ago.

President Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill earlier this month. He also denied the account of a second woman, Deborah Ramirez, who told The New Yorker magazine that Kavanaugh caused her to touch his penis at a party when both were Yale freshmen.

"The second accuser has nothing". "She admits she was drunk". "In the years following the therapy session, we spoke a number of times about how the assault affected her".

But later in the day, President Trump ripped Ramirez as he blamed Democrats for playing a "con game".

Kavanaugh appeared for his first on-camera interview about the allegations on Fox News Monday night in which he rejected them and defended himself with his wife, Ashley, by his side.

That vote on Kavanaugh's nomination has been pushed back so he can answer allegations leveled by one of his accusers: psychology researcher and Palo Alto University professor Christine Blasey Ford.

Ramirez, 53, is a former Yale University classmate of Kavanaugh's and his second accuser of sexual assault.

That's also helped Republicans on who Americans prefer to control Congress. Democrats continue to lead on the question of which party's candidate people are more likely to vote for in their congressional district by 7 points, 48 to 41 percent.

It's unclear whether these protests will have any effect on the Senate Republicans, who seem dead set on holding a vote, regardless of the mounting accusations against Kavanaugh.

Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell say they are determined to get Kavanaugh on the court, calling the allegations against him false and politically motivated.

"Our goal is to have a respectful hearing", McConnell said.

"We need Dr. Ford and all women to be truly listened to and heard, and Republicans need to stop trying to just rush this through", Sen.

Independent to whether Ford is telling the truth, however, 43% oppose Kavanaugh's nomination, while 38% support it.

"There is nothing for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to go look at from a forensic point of view", he said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a Republican aide told Fox News the committee reserves its right to have counsel ask questions of Ford but beyond that has not determined how to proceed.

So will his chief accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, who said he sexually assaulted her in high school. I have no first-hand knowledge of any of the allegations against Judge Kavanaugh, but I thought this conversation was relevant as it goes to the question of his truthfulness.

Shaunna Thomas, executive director of UltraViolet Action, a progressive groups that opposes Kavanaugh's confirmation, criticized the judge for choosing the "comfort of a partisan network" to air his denials. A major slip-up could endanger Kavanaugh's confirmation and create political pain for the GOP in the midterm elections. And she said she was totally inebriated and she was all messed up, and she doesn't know it was him. And there remained concern among aides and Trump himself about how Kavanaugh would hold up facing far fiercer questioning from Senate Democrats, according to a White House official not authorized to speak publicly.
