Rosenstein discussed recording Trump, invoking 25th Amendment

  • NYT Deputy attorney general plotted to oust Trump

White House insiders reportedly believe former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director Andrew McCabe's team planted a story in the press suggesting Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is conspiring against the president, according to Politico on Saturday.

But a source told the BBC that the comment was sarcastic.

"I will not further comment on a story based on anonymous sources who are obviously biased against the department and are advancing their own personal agenda".

"The New York Times' story is inaccurate and factually incorrect", Rosenstein said.

Mr McCabe's lawyer, Michael Bromwich, said that his client had drafted memos to "memorialise significant discussions he had with high level officials and preserved them so he would have an accurate, contemporaneous record of those discussions".

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement: "This story must not be used as a pretext for the corrupt goal of firing Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein in order to install an official who will allow the president to interfere with the Special Counsel's investigation". "But let me be clear about this: Based on my personal dealings with the president, there is no basis to invoke the 25th Amendment". However Sean Hannity, who has perhaps even more influence with the president than Ingraham or Pirro, said Trump should not do that.

That memo was used by the White House as a central justification for Comey's firing, but many law enforcement officials suspected that that was a pretext and that Rosenstein had been manipulated into providing cover for possible obstruction of justice.

Or did Rosenstein actually suggest a 25th Amendment overthrow?

Rosenstein, the country's 37th deputy USA attorney general, graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1986, according to his official biography on the Department of Justice website.

The White House initially held up that memo as justification for Mr Comey's firing, though Mr Trump has said he was thinking about "this Russian Federation thing" when he made the move. The person said Rosenstein made the remark sarcastically.

The caveat? Both are Fox News hosts adored by Trump - Laura Ingraham and Sean Hannity.

Rosenstein issued a second statement not long after the president spoke.

Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist, told Business Insider last month that he thought Francisco made for an ideal candidate to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"Well, what do you want me to do, Andy, wear a wire?"

9 May 2017 - Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein submits a memo to the attorney general regarding FBI boss James Comey's investigation into Hillary Clinton's handling of classified documents.

Despite unrelenting criticism from the White House on the course of the investigation into Russia's election interference, Rosenstein has offered unqualified support for Mueller.

The calls for Rosenstein's firing appeared to increase at the same time special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation has picked up speed and took out several in the president's circle with indictments, guilty pleas or cooperation agreements.

During Francisco's confirmation hearings a year ago, the Senate Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein, mentioned his expressed support for Trump's travel ban and urged him in a letter to "publicly commit to refuse any order or request - whether express or implied - to interfere in the Special Counsel's investigation".

Members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus filed articles of impeachment against Rosenstein in July for what they alleged is his failure to hand over documents to Congress about the Russian Federation investigation.
