Trump open to Russian Federation probe interview 'under certain circumstances'

"I would say Jeff [Sessions] should be investigating who the author of that piece was because I really believe it's national security", he said.
Trump cited "national security" Friday as the reason for such an extraordinary probe, and he called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to get it going.
President Donald Trump declared Friday the Department of Justice should try to identify the writer of a bitingly critical New York Timesopinionpiece, purportedly submitted by a member of an administration "resistance" movement straining to thwart his most risky impulses.
The President said he finds the ordeal unsettling, primarily because the author could have a security clearance and has access to "high level national security" meetings.
And a week on which an anonymous Trump administration official penned a New York Times op-ed that detailed an effort "to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump's more misguided impulses until he is out of office".
Indeed, the piece seemed written deliberately to send the president down a nasty rabbit hole with rants and recriminations - the exact behavior to which the unknown author objected.
We have done so at the request of the author, a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose job would be jeopardized by its disclosure.
Mr. Trump said he was also considering action against The Times, though he did not elaborate. And it's far from clear that the vivid portraits of erratic presidential behavior described by Woodward and the op-ed writer would breach national security. They were reported to have sent each other text messages with the phrase "the sleeper cells have awoken", according to "The Washington Post". "And, I would say, including the political people, because some political people knew about this as well". "This coward should do the right thing and resign", Sanders said in a statement.

Donald Trump has used a campaign rally to hit back at explosive claims made by a member of his senior staff.
In a note attached to the top of the op-ed, the Times explained its decision for keeping the author anonymous.
"We have somebody in what I call the failing New York Times that's talking about he's part of the resistance inside the Trump administration".
Shortly after Trump's call for a Justice Department investigation into the op-ed article, Obama rebuked his successor in a speech in Urbana, Illinois.
The White House slammed the editorial, the author, and the New York Times in a blistering statement issued on September 5. The Times stood by its story and dismissed a Trump attorney's demand for an apology and retraction. Victor told the Federal Bureau of Investigation she mailed the document to an online news outlet.
Ryan countered the issue of Trump's earlier fiscal 2018 omnibus veto threat by saying it ultimately never materialized - even against Trump's constant rhetoric and apparent willingness to provoke a shutdown.
The article, which was published on Wednesday, said "unsung heroes" were quietly working within the administration to frustrate the president's "worst inclinations". He also unleashed on Trump's border wall, lack of emergency response after Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and immigration laws.
