  • Pentagon sends 800 troops to US-Mexico border as migrant caravan advances

President Trump is considering a complete shut down of the southern United States border to Central American immigrants and the deployment of 1,000 troops to the region in advance of a "caravan" of migrants seeking asylum, a report said Thursday.

The addition of 800 or more active duty troops, if approved, as expected, by Mattis, is in response to a request from the Department of Homeland Security, which manages the Border Patrol, a USA official said.

Immigration and customs agents in the area have already been bolstered by some 2,100 National Guard troops, as the Trump administration has made it a priority to prevent undocumented immigrants from entering the U.S. CNN first reported the Pentagon's intent to sign off on more troops. They will include engineers to help with the construction of tents and fencing, doctors for medical support, and potentially some personnel to operate drones along the border, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the deployment had not yet been finished. It's not yet exactly clear where they will deploy.

The news came shortly after President Donald Trump said in a tweet that he was "bringing out the military" to address what he's calling a national emergency at the southern border.

The caravan is more than 1,000 miles south of the border, and it is unclear when or whether the migrants will arrive, and how many will seek to cross into the United States.

As for Trump's long-promised border wall, one woman said border walls in general are "just wrong".

Ivory Kelly-Martin ran for 98 yards for Iowa, which had its first shutout since a 28-0 victory at IL two years ago. Purdue also set a school record for points scored against the Buckeyes , besting the previous mark of 41 in 1967.

The order would be akin to Trump's previous aggressive immigration-blocking executive orders, such as the travel ban aimed at halting people from some Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S.

The migrants in the sprawling caravan - once estimated by the United Nations to number more than 7,000 - are hoping to make it to the United States.

Those troops are mainly serving in a support role to help free up border patrol officers.

He told them to return to their home countries and if they want, they can apply for citizenship status like millions of others are doing.
