Emergency alert test going out to mobile phones nationwide

02 October, 2018, 21:57 | Author: Vicki Mclaughlin
  • FEMA to test emergency alert system Wednesday

"Periodic testing is a way to access the operational readiness of the infrastructure and determine whether technological improvements are needed".

What will be sent out Wednesday afternoon is just a test.

A test of broadcast systems will happen at 2:20 p.m. EDT. Therefore, if you have a smartphone capable of receiving WEA alerts, your phone will receive the alert. If you do, then you know that the test, which thankfully will not allow Trump to simply inundate everyone's phones with his thoughts on the latest episode of Fox & Friends, was delayed... until tomorrow.

Two minutes later, the EAS test takes place - this is the system used by the President to send out messages during national emergencies via radio, television and other platforms. "No action is needed".

Johnson said the system will be used to notify USA citizens of certain events of "national significance".

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says it'll sound like an Amber Alert or flood warning.

Users will not be able to block or otherwise opt out of the test "Presidential Alert" message.

The EAS is a national public warning system that provides the President with the communications capability to address the nation during a national emergency. The test message will be similar to regular monthly EAS test messages with which the public is familiar.

"THIS IS A TEST of the National Emergency Alert System".

Everyone around the country will get an alert on their phone at the same time on Wednesday as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) conducts a test of the national Wireless Emergency Alert system. Some cell phones will receive the message; others will not.
