  • GOP Sen. Mitch Mc Connell on Wednesday denied a request made by Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer to approve a briefing by FBI agents regarding the bureau’s background investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

In his statement, Grassley said that "this investigation found no hint of misconduct and the same is true of the six prior FBI background investigations conducted during Judge Kavanaugh's 25 years of public service".

Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested, including actress Amy Schumer.

Trump nominated Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who had been a swing vote on a panel now equally divided between four conservative and four liberal justices.

Republicans hold 51 of the 100 Senate seats.

Mr Kavanaugh denies any wrongdoing and an important vote on his future is expected to take place on Friday.

With a razor-thin majority in the upper chamber, Senate Republicans can afford to lose only one GOP vote if all Democrats vote against the nomination. Sen.

Judge said in a statement he did not remember the incident but FBI agents spoke to him for three hours during their investigation.

The FBI is said to have interviewed Judge for three hours. Jeff Flake of Arizona in an elevator in a televised exchange that went viral.

While the comments by Flake and Collins were positive, neither explicitly announced support for Kavanaugh.

The announcement of the vote came after some Republican senators expressed dismay over Trump's mockery of two of the women who have come forward with claims against Kavanaugh.

Senator Joe Manchin, the only remaining undecided Democrat, said he would finish reading the report on Friday morning.

Trump claimed the Federal Bureau of Investigation report exonerated Kavanaugh and expressed optimism about Republican chances in the November midterm elections, where control of the House of Representatives and Senate could be at stake.

Kavanaugh and Ford appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, where they answered questions about the allegations. Roche also said he believed Deborah Ramirez , another Yale classmate who claimed sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh.

In an October 3 piece for Politico, journalist Matthew Miller stressed that Democrats needed to be aggressive and proactive in demanding a more comprehensive investigation of Kavanaugh. In the short term he could provide the decisive fifth vote for a conservative majority on the nine-member court.

Ford testified last week at a dramatic Judiciary Committee hearing that when she was 15, a drunken 17-year-old Kavanaugh pinned her down, tried to remove her clothing and covered her mouth after she screamed.

Mr Trump, who on Tuesday scornfully mocked Ms Ford's Judiciary panel testimony, tweeted that Mr Kavanaugh's "great life can not be ruined by mean" and "despicable Democrats and totally uncorroborated allegations!"

"I was very emotional last Thursday, more so than I have ever been".

He added that his September 27 testimony reflected his "overwhelming frustration" at the accusations from Christine Blasey Ford and others. "I know that my tone was sharp, and I said a few things I should not have said".

McConnell was so intent on that 5-4 goal that he blocked former President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee.

The report arrived at a Capitol palpably tense over the political stakes of the nomination fight and from aggressive anti-Kavanaugh protesters who have rattled and reportedly harassed senators. He said the Senate will be voting this week on Kavanaugh's nomination.

Almost 8 in 10 Republicans said they approve of how Trump has handled the allegations in the new poll, which was conducted before Trump mocked Ford at Tuesday night's rally. Just one physical copy of the report will be available, and only to senators and 10 committee staffers cleared to view the material.

The top Senate Judiciary Democrat, Dianne Feinstein, said the report appeared insufficient to lay to rest concerns about Kavanaugh. If so, that could be enough for a Trump victory in this battle.

White House spokesman Raj Shah said the Trump administration was "fully confident" Mr Kavanaugh had the necessary support.
