Murdered Saudi journalist 'strangled as soon as he entered consulate'

  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron are seen at a news conference after a Syria summit in Istanbul Turkey

The statement comes hours after Saudi Arabia's chief public prosecutor ended his visit to Istanbul, during which he met Fidan twice and visited the kingdom's consulate and the regional offices of the Turkish intelligence agency.

Turkey has given its first official statement on how writer Jamal Khashoggi was killed, saying he was immediately strangled, then dismembered.

"The victim Jamal Khashoggi's body was dismembered and destroyed following his death by suffocation again, in line with the advance plans", the two-page statement read.

But Turkey, which released a stream of evidence undermining Saudi Arabia's early denials, has demanded more details including the whereabouts of Mr Khashoggi's body and who ordered his killing.

Saudi chief prosecutor al-Mojeb held talks with Fidan and other Turkish officials in Istanbul this week and departed Wednesday.

It is also pressing Saudi Arabia for information concerning his remains, which still haven't been found.

"The ongoing revelations about the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as well as certain Saudi actions related to Yemen and Lebanon, have raised further serious concerns about the transparency, accountability, and judgment of current decision makers in Saudi Arabia", the senators wrote.

The five U.S. lawmakers, led by Senator Marco Rubio, said they would use the Atomic Energy Act to block any U.S. -Saudi nuclear agreements if Trump did not cut off talks. Both Saudi Arabia and Turkey are investigating Khashoggi's death.

Mr Mojeb later said the killing was premeditated and Riyadh said 18 suspects had been arrested.

Mr Khashoggi, a 59-year-old columnist for The Washington Post, vanished after entering the consulate in Istanbul to pick up paperwork for his upcoming marriage to his fiancee, who was waiting for him outside.

The United States has called for transparency in the investigation of Khashoggi's death and revoked the US visas of some Saudis over the incident.

Turkey alleges a Saudi hit squad from Saudi Arabia - including a member of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's entourage during a trip to the United States - travelled to Istanbul to kill the journalist and then tried to cover it up.
