Rectangular iceberg spotted in sea off Antarctica

  • NASA’s sea ice survey captures bizarre perfectly rectangular iceberg

She said there were two types of iceberg.

NASA is apparently happy to oblige, and has now directed fans to a Flickr page that features more of the odd iceberg as well as other tabular slabs that the team documented while flying high over the frozen region.

Floating off the Antarctic coast, there's a profoundly angular iceberg that has unwittingly become the object of internet intrigue. The berg appears toward the end of the clip on the left.

"IceBridge and ICESat-2 both use laser altimeters that fire pulses of light toward the ground and measure how long it takes for that light to bounce off the ice and return to the instruments' sensors", NASA said earlier this month.

What happened:NASA posted a photo on Twitter of an iceberg that looks like a rectangle.

Last year, the iceberg A-68 broke off Antarctica's Larsen C ice shelf after years of cracks spreading across the ice - but it's remained "stuck" near the ice shelf.

According to scientists, the iceberg's sharp angles and flat surface are an indication that it had probably recently broken off the ice shelf.

The style options include three new watch faces in Silver, Midnight Black and Rose Gold, and new customisable watch band colors. The back is a mix of magnesium and aluminum (only on the kickstand) but in a matching finish that keeps things looking uniform.

Harbeck was a part of a survey to assess the changes in the ice height of glacier draining into Larsen A, B, C embayments.

Not satisfied with blowing our minds once, NASA released an image on Monday showing a second rectangular iceberg. Over time, the sea and wind will start to erode its smooth edges.

Categorized as a tabular iceberg, the square-like iceberg was estimated to be over a mile across. It was a naturally occurring phenomenon called tabular ice which, unlike the iceberg that sank the Titanic in 1912, has flat tops and steep sides.

"What makes this one a bit unusual is that it looks nearly like a square", Brunt said. A flight for Operation IceBridge captured the photo.

Scientists took the snap from a plane used to monitor changing land and sea ice in the South Pole.

While it is hard to estimate the size of the iceberg from the photograph, experts said it was likely over a mile (1.6 kilometers) in length. And the portion above the surface is likely just 10 percent of the total iceberg, Petty says.
