IEC figures show around four million people voted in last weekend's parliamentary election that was held in 32 out of 34 provinces after months of chaotic preparations.

The general Scott Miller, commander-in-chief of the american army and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in Afghanistan, present at the time of the attack, was unharmed. Miller escaped unharmed but another USA general was wounded.

The voting process in Kandahar started under tight security at 08:00 a.m. local time, as security forces have started checking cars crossing throughout the election sites in the provincial capital Kandahar city and other districts.

Meanwhile, the regional IECC office says that it has registered dozens of complaints against violations, challenges and election violations on election day.

Thousands of soldiers were deployed to boost the morale of voters shaken by the killing of Razeq, who was widely credited in the province with maintaining stability.

Major roads throughout southern Kandahar were closed almost 24 hours before polls opened to stop vehicle-born explosive devices from entering the province, said provincial governor's spokesman Aziz Ahmed Azizi. Razeq's death served as a rallying cry for some voters and candidates.

The parliamentary elections in southern Kandahar province were due to be conducted last Saturday but the voting was postponed due to the deadly incident in governor's compound.

With the Taliban operating freely across much of the country and heavy pressure from global partners for the vote to be held, the election was seen as a major test of the credibility of the government. It had also cautioned teachers not to use schools as voting booths.

Unofficial election results of the parliamentary balloting are not expected before mid-November and official results sometime in December.
