  • Magic Circle is among the favorites for the 2018 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 6

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy riding Cross Counter wins the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on November 6, 2018, in Melbourne, Australia.

On a rain-affected track and ridden by McEvoy for trainer Charlie Appleby, Cross Counter defeated Marmelo and A Prince Of Arran in an all-northern hemisphere finish.

The win also represented another first: the breaking of Godolphin and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's 30-year drought at the race.

In that year Godolphin had so many runners in the Cup they were forced to hastily manufacture a yellow cap for Qewy to complement the blue, white, black and red ones that have been used in races when had they had four runners in the past.

The Irish five-year-old fractured his right shoulder just 600m into the race but medical staff were unable to save him.

He said: "It was an unbelievable run - I'm completely speechless".

Trained by Charlie Appleby, Cross Counter became the first English-trained horse to win the race, taking the top prize of $2.8 million.

Yet, while Appleby was quick to credit Sheikh Mohammed, it was the aforementioned McEvoy - basking in the glory of a third Melbourne Cup win - who recalled their early days on the A1, driving to meetings at Doncaster and York.

O'Brien called the death "very sad" but said it was lucky jockey Ryan Moore remained unharmed.

Sunday's announcement by Sirisena came as the country's main Tamil party urged him to end the worsening political crisis. A police informant has said Wickremesinghe and a Cabinet member, former army commander Sarath Fonseka, were behind it.

McEvoy's win on the 9-1 shot followed his Melbourne Cup triumphs on Almandin in 2016 and Brew in 2000.

"For me it's obviously very special to be here, but for the team, it's just fantastic".

Buick was among the first to congratulate Appleby after a clean-sweep by British horses - Cross Counter overhauled Hughie Morrison's Marmelo and A Prince Of Arran from the yard of Charlie Fellowes late on.

"I have spoken to his highness and he's over the moon about this result."

"This was an unfortunate incident that happens infrequently, with Victoria having one of the best safety records in world racing".

Sportsbet said it had experienced technical issues due to "unprecedented demand and we fixed these issues as a priority".

"We've campaigned over the last three years now and we've been competitive, but we've always learnt what horse we thought was going to be competitive on the big day", Appleby told Channel 7. With the cost of training a thoroughbred averaging around £20,000 ($26,000) a year, that means it may have spent as much as £4.8 million on getting the animals race ready.

"RSPCA Australia has long voiced its concerns about the welfare of racehorses, including the use of inhumane devices such as whips and tongue ties, as well as the risk to injury and death during races".
