"Thank you to all!"

With results still coming in, Democrats were on track to gain control of the House, while Republicans kept their Senate majority. The Democrats now control the lower house for the first time in eight years. Fox and NBC television networks called the result in the US House of Representatives, while confirming expectations that Trump´s Republicans will retain control of the Senate.

Markets in Asia and Europe mostly rose on Wednesday, but analysts warned about the economic impact from gridlock on Capitol Hill left the two houses of Congress split between Democrats and Republicans.

As key races remained tight around the country, Democrats were upbeat about their chance of winning the House after campaigns that emphasised kitchen-table issues and sought to harness opposition to Mr Trump among suburban women and college graduates.

The GOP also got major wins in toss-up governors races in states like Florida and OH, though Democrats did manage to pick up wins in a number of states like IL and MI. Sanders said he would continue making calls Wednesday.

In gubernatorial races, Republican Kris Kobach, a Trump ally, was beaten by a Democrat in Kansas. Joe Donnelly in a hard-fought race that saw Trump visit the Hoosier state several times in an attempt to flip the seat for the GOP. Claire McCaskill in Missouri and Attorney General Mike DeWine defeated Democrat Richard Cordray in the race for OH governor.

Since 1946, the president's party has lost an average of 25 House seats in midterm elections, according to Gallup.

Republicans have picked up three seats in the Senate so far, defeating Democratic incumbents in Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota.

The President had dinner with his family and watched the results, which could have a profound impact on the rest of his term and could reshape Washington's balance of power, in the residence of the White House.

For the Democrats taking control of the House gives them an opportunity to be more assertive in the Congress and prevent Trump for achieving his legislative agenda.

With the final days of the 2018 campaign interrupted by a spate of politically motivated attempted bombings and a massacre at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, about 2 in 10 Democratic and Republican voters think their own party's way of talking about politics is leading to an increase in violence.

Voters between the ages of 18 and 34 backed Democrats by 62 percent to 34 percent, up from 2014 when 54 percent backed Democrats and 36 percent supported Republicans.

"There will be, I imagine, great introspection within the Trump White House", said Gearan, who is now the director of the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics. The US midterm elections are widely seen as a referendum on the president.

Pakistani community members also weighed in on the midterm elections.

"In the end, we hold the House because of the strong economy", the Louisiana Republican told The Associated Press on the eve of Election Day. "We expect him to follow through and have another successful two years just like he has the previous two years".

Overall, more voters disapproved of Trump's job performance than approved - a finding that is largely consistent with recent polling.

Nearly a quarter of voters considered immigration to be the top issue, while another one-fifth said it was the economy. She stressed the president's efforts to mobilize GOP voters in a ground game aimed at "defying midterm history".

The nationwide survey indicated that almost two-thirds said Trump was a reason for their vote. Ahead of the election, both parties claimed that the emotionally charged debate over Kavanaugh's confirmation would motivate their supporters to turn out.
