Dolce & Gabbana cancels fashion show after hurting Chinese sentiments

  • Dolce and Gabbana’s controversial ad showing a lady eat pizza with chopsticks

Geng Shuang, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, was also asked about the controversy on Thursday, saying he hoped the scandal would not become a "diplomatic" one.

High profile celebrities, including Elton John and Glee executive producer Ryan Murphy, responded to boycott the brand, not least because Mr Dolce and Mr Gabbana are themselves gay too, but mostly for the brand's narrow-mindedness in an age of tolerance and inclusivity.

The designers concluded the video by saying "sorry" in Chinese.

The offensive campaign from Dolce & Gabanna was still up on the label's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds at the time of writing, but it had been taken off China's Weibo platform. The country has established itself as an economic powerhouse, which means Western brands trying to enter the market need to get rid of dated ideas of "the west is best" and come up with sophisticated and nuanced ways to cater to new markets. "Fashion Brands have a social responsibility to steer public consciousness in the right direction", she added.

The controversy erupted earlier this week when a series of ads released by the luxury brand to promote a Shanghai fashion featured a Chinese woman struggling to eat spaghetti and pizza with chopsticks.

Because Dolce & Gabbana needs China more than China needs them.

That pitch helped expand the company's sales to $1.54 billion (U.S.) a year ago, according to Business Insider.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana - who are founders of the world-famous fashion house that has been making clothes for almost 40 years - have recorded a message in Mandarin to apologise for the firm's recent advertisement that offered instructions on how to eat Italian typical foods with chopsticks.

The pair (sort of) apologised, but only to the people who worked on the show or were set to attend.

D&G has been deserted by a growing list of celebrities in the fallout.

Beijing's tough stand also prompted the brand's ambassadors for Asia Pacific - singer Karry Wang and actress Dilraba Dilmurat - to end their contracts. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star Zhang Ziyi said she would boycott the brand. On Friday, the founders apologized in Mandarin in a video clip, apologizing to Chinese people worldwide.

Last April the brand posted a campaign on Weibo that showed impoverished people in run-down areas of Beijing pictured with Dolce & Gabbana models ahead of a catwalk show in the city.

Dolce&Gabbana apologized on Instagram and said the accounts had been hacked.

Later, screenshots that circulated of co-founder Stefano Gabbana's private message box on Instagram worsened the drama: the designer described China using poop emojis and said that the videos were posted "by my will". Dolce & Gabbana posted a similar message to their account, claiming that both Stefano's personal account and the brands account had been hacked.
