  • An airstrike by Saudi Arabia hits a site in the outskirts of Yemen’s capital Sana'a

The war has left almost 10,000 people dead and unleashed what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Yemen has been at war since March 2015 when Houthis occupied northern Yemen, forcing the government into exile, resulting in a Saudi-led coalition being formed to support the government that has waged a destructive air campaign in the country.

The UN chief spoke hours after the Saudi-led coalition said it had attacked an airbase in the rebel-held capital of Sanaa and fighting flared between the Houthi rebels and pro-government forces near the key port of Hodeida.

Landmines and Houthi mortar shells killed 20 soldiers during the ongoing offensive in Hodeidah, according to other sources of government-controlled medical centers.

The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) warned that more than seven million children are facing a serious threat of starvation in Yemen.

UN refugee agency UNHCR special envoy Angelina Jolie said the worldwide community had been "shamefully slow" and urged the UN Security Council to find a negotiated end to the war.

"As an global community we have been shamefully slow to act to end the crisis in Yemen", she said in a statement Sunday.

Earlier in the day, Guterres had called for a halt to violence in Yemen to pull the country back from a "precipice" and build momentum toward talks on ending the war. Riyadh has accused the Houthi rebel group of serving as a proxy force for Iran, Saudi Arabia's arch foe in the region.

Saudi Arabia and its allies intervened in the war in the following year to bolster Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi whose government fled to the southern city of Aden.

Later on Wednesday, Yemeni security and medical officials said an airstrike by a Saudi-led coalition killed five civilians and wounded eight more just south of Hodeida.

Airstrikes and naval artillery pounded rebel positions around the Red Sea coastal city, where government backed-troops are launching a major ground assault in an attempt to wrest it from dug-in rebels.
