  • President Donald Trump's last sit-down meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin was in Finland in July

Trump said in an interview with the Washington Post that he might cancel the meeting, after Russian Federation seized three Ukrainian naval vessels at the weekend.

It is noted that this is the first time that Putin addressed the incident that took place three days ago.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters on Wednesday that Moscow would prefer Washington to use direct diplomatic channels to speak to Russian Federation, rather than through media outlets.

"This meeting is necessary for both sides", Ushakov said.

A number of worldwide representatives weighed in on the escalating naval standoff between Russian Federation and Ukraine on Wednesday, as the protagonists continued to blame one another for the incident that sparked it on Sunday off the coast of Crimea.

Germany and France have spoken against toughening of sanctions against Russian Federation after the Kerch Strait confrontation, the German newspaper Welt reported with reference European Union diplomatic sources. He said he would decide on a course afterward.

Ukraine will defend itself militarily if it has to against "Russian aggression" along the country's coastline in the sea of Azov, the country's foreign minister has told Sky News.

Germany is still committed to the NordStream 2 pipeline, which will allow Russian Federation to bypass Ukraine in transporting gas to Europe, despite escalating tension in the region, a government spokesman in Berlin said on Wednesday. But White House aides were still planning for the Putin meeting after Trump's comments.

Later in the day, following Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko's order, the Council of National Security and Defense of Ukraine chose to impose martial law in the country.

"It's extremely important to prevent an uncontrollable and senseless arms race", he said.

"I think we are at a crossroads", Mr Xi said.

The warning from Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, came ahead of the two leaders' high-stakes sit-down on Saturday evening. The new S-400 systems will be operational by the end of the year.

Xi said on Wednesday (Thursday NZT) the global community needs to build consensus to solve the conflict between free trade and protectionism.

Moscow has suggested that Kiev provoked the incident to boost support for Poroshenko, who is facing a tough re-election battle in a presidential vote set for next March. We are doing our duty to protect our native land.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters during a conference call that the Kremlin was aware of the statement by Trump, but the meeting had been approved and was still being prepared. The United States targeted US$250 billion in Chinese products, and Beijing lashed back by slapping tariffs on US$110 billion worth of U.S. goods.

Kudlow said the administration has been "extremely disappointed" by China's engagement in trade talks but the meeting between Trump and Xi on the sidelines of the G-20 summit could be a game-changer.

Kudlow added that if the USA doesn't get "satisfactory" responses to its trade positions more tariffs will be imposed.

"I hope they understand that", he said.

But a spokesman for the foreign ministry said the debate about further sanctions against Russian Federation over the conflict in Ukraine was premature.
